This Video was taken in the spring of 1989 at Heath, Pa. This station has (6) 400 HP Buffalo, NY made Snow Tandem Natural gas pumping engines. They were installed between 1911 and 1915. In this video, 4 of them are running under full load pumping natural gas through the Columbia Natural Gas Pipeline to the Buffalo, NY area. This was an unusual event as usually a large Wakusha engine is running in the corner of the pump house making so much racket that the mechanical music from these engines could not be heard.. + Informações

This is Leawood Pump in the Derbyshire village of Cromford. It was built in 1849 to pump water from the river Derwent into the Cromford Canal. One of two Hathorn Davey pumping engines at the Cambridge Museum Of Technology. Visit their website at : www.museumoftechnology.com To quote their website : "This is one of the two Hathorn Davey pumping engines installed in 1894 to pump the sewage from the well beneath the engines to the treatment plant at Milton. These are the only engines of this type still running in the world. Each engine itself consists of two cylinders in tandem, high pressure and low pressure, driving a rocking disc. This disc acts as a ninety degree bell crank converting the horizontal motion of the engine into the vertical motion of the pump rods. There are two pump rods which drive the bucket of each pump in turn. These steam engines pumped the sewage from Cambridge through underground pipes to the sewage farm at Milton, 2 miles away (2km). As the town grew in size and more roads and pavements were drained into the sewage system the original pumps could no longer cope with the volume of fluid in a heavy rainfall. This mixture of water and other objects was used to cool the condensers of the steam engine and when the condensers were cleaned some of the pipes were often found blocked by scrubbing brushes or similar objects. The condenser air-pump is driven from an arm on the end of the flywheel shaft through two vertical rods". + Informações

A short film showing my model Newcomen atmospheric pumping engine working on live steam in the Tram Shed at the Black Country Living Museum on 19th June 2011. The model has been constructed almost entirely from scrap and recycled materials, taking around 130 hours worth of evenings to complete. The steam cylinder is open-topped and has a bore of 2.125 inches and a stroke of about 5 inches. Power comes from the atmosphere pushing the piston into a vacuum caused by condensing the steam in the cylinder, raising the pump weight. The pumping stroke is made by gravity.. + Informações

Video'ed at the Hamilton Museum of Science and Technology, Hamilton, Ontario. This model was part of a large Meccano display organised by the Canadian Modeling Association for Meccano and Allied Systems (CMAMAS) in conjunction with the Museum. I constructed this model mostly according to a published modelplan, "CSM14: Twin Beem [sic] Pumping Engine". If you have handy a copy of the Modelplan, see if you can spot my various improvisations! The Modelplan is available from CMAMAS for a modest cost: cmamas.ca As noted in the Modelplan, "The model is based upon an amalgam of prototypes, chief amongst which is the small twin engine built in 1867, and now preserved at Kew Bridge Engine Station in London, England. During its 100-odd years of working life it was located on Lord Rothschild's country estate at Dancers End, Hertfordshire, England. The engine was designed to lift water from a well sited under the engine cylinders, and the lift pump mechanism would be on the end of the piston rods extending below ground level. Water would then be send to storage or header tanks by force pumps also worked from the beams. These pumps are not reproduced in the model. When completed the model is extremely smooth in operation, runs quietly, and is a fascinating pleasure to watch. For maximum effect in this regard, it is strongly recommended that a very quiet model motor, or preferably a noiseless mains induction motor be used to drive the model." This is an engine I just bought second hand. I really like it as a model in that it's a replica of a series of engines made in the late 19th and early 20th century. I put a Jensen drive pulley on mine so it could run a workshop, but these engines were originally intended only for pumping water. It's having some trouble in this video, but I uploaded it anyway because it shows the engine running with and without loads and with and without water. When you start it there can't be water in the system, as there is too much drag on the pump. Once it gets going well you can fill the reservoir and watch it go. The circulating water acts as a coolant, as it does in the real Ericssons, keeping the cool side of the engine cooler. Nevertheless the entire model gets very hot. Oil will bubble from the bearings, and I can not handle it by the legs for more than a few seconds with gloves on.. + Informações

Hayward Tyler hot air pumping engine. The first fire and start after 80 years. some pictures of the engine in its original location before restoration. Still some work to do to finish the job but the engine should be at rallys in 2010 This is the 6 inch Hayward Tyler engine which came from Thorpe Satchville Nr Melton Mowbray, UK. It was originally used to supply water to a large house from a well. It takes about an hour to get enough heat into the engine to be able to start it. Having closed the vent, a final pull lets the pistons fall and hopefully the resultant hot expansion stroke is enough to lift the pistons for the next stroke. After about 10 revs - its all "too much" and it stops. Five minutes later the heat from the furnace had built up a little more and we got 20 revs. Another five minutes later it had enough heat in all that metal to keep it running.
