Suicide Pigeon is the first case study of roomforthoughts artistic research: Labyrinth Psychotica This 130 m2 Labyrinth tries to imagine what it is like to be a clear thought in a psychotic mind. It was built and presented at Lokaal 01 in 2006, Breda, The Netherlands. This case study was focussed on the question if an artwork could transfer aspects of the experience of what it would be like to be psychotic. The work studies the role the viewer plays in artistic research. The structure was inspired by the white cliché and the fragility of being in an isolation cell. The work consists mostly of thin white paper. While the work is low tech, it searches for the more poetic and positive experiences of psychosis; bewilderment, Alice in Wonderland, the feeling of 'The Unreal' and 'The Other'. The centre of the labyrinth is designed as a command centre from which one believes that one can control the thoughts, idea's and movement of other visitors. It also deals with the creation of meaning and the need to follow symbols and interpreted assignments, before they become terrifying. Two English girls allowed me to interview them and record their experience. Remarkable is the fact that one girl's father had psychosis, but she did not know what it was, because she did not have a good relationship with her father. Labyrinth Psychotica 'Do-It-Yourself Psychosis' On May 24th 2011 we did our first workshop experiment in which 14 participants were first given a presentation about voice hearing in relation to psychosis. After which the participants were asked to delve deep into their selves and investigate what their own psychosis might be. For this we imagined that psychosis is 'mad mind-space' that resides in us all, and that the entrance to this space can be opened with a dimmer switch. A switch that acts like a filter to our environment and inner world. What is it like to be psychotic? Labyrinth Psychotica is an artistic research PhD project by Jennifer Kanary Nikolov(a). The dissertation explores scientific and artistic methods of understanding the subjective experience of psychosis. A do-it-yourself psychosis kit, a form of Digital LSD. www.labyrinthpsychotica.org This particular test video is the second draft of the introduction of the wearable Labyrinth Psychotica using augmented reality goggles. Each experience begins with a 'heartbeat transfer' that either is successful, or fails. Failure due to heartbeat being too low, or too high, requiring the wearer to act accordingly. The movements are detected by a Wii. The system reacts to the movements of the wearer.
