Com um enredo rico, permeado por elementos de conspirações e intrigas, "Prototype" pretende fazer uma abordagem diferente ao gênero de mundo aberto, popularizado por "Grand Theft Auto" Prototype conta a história de Alex Mercer, um homem transformado numa arma biológica, assombrado por seu passado e que luta em uma guerra secreta na cidade de Nova York. Logo entra em cena uma trama que ameaça o futuro da humanidade. O protagonista, com seus poderes mutantes, é capaz de transformar-se em uma "réplica" perfeita daqueles que atravessam o seu caminho, roubando inclusive habilidades e poderes. Mas o processo é violento, pois ele devora suas vítimas. Mercer pode passar por qualquer superfície e destruir tudo o que aparece, o que promete generosas doses de ação. Mercer é capaz de usar diversas armas, mas seu próprio corpo já é uma máquina de guerra: o braço, por exemplo, pode se transformar num instrumento perfurocortante e estraçalhar quem estiver pela frente. Desenvolvido para Xbox 360, PS3 e PC, Prototype remete à experiência obtida em Crackdown pois o protagonista passeia por prédios e construções lembrando as acrobacias corporais do esporte Parkour e os saltos daquele game.
