Joseph "Wingy" Manone (1900 - 1982) was a New Orleans trumpet player and vocalist who lost his right arm in a streetcar accident when he was ten years old. He wore a prosthetic arm while on stage performing and used it so well that many never noticed his disability. He started out playing on Mississippi riverboats and with the Original Crescent City Jazzers. The band later changed their name to the Arcadian Serenaders and he made his recording debut with the group in 1924. He worked in a series of bands (occasionally as a leader) all over the country, before starting his own band Joe Manone's Harmony Kings and recording with them in 1927. The following year Manone played in Chicago before relocating to New York. In 1929 recorded with Benny Goodman's Boys and then moved back to Chicago and led a band called the Cellar Boys at a club called My Cellar. His 1930 song "Tar Paper Stomp" is the basis for the riff that would later become Glenn Miller's famous "In the Mood". In 1934 Manone moved back to New York and scored a hit record with "The Isle of Capri"and became a popular attraction. In 1940 Manone moved to Los Angeles and appeared in the Bing Crosby movie "Rhythm on the River", and appeared regularly on Bing's radio shows. When the Crosby show ended he played in Las Vegas and decided to move there and lived there until his death. Happy Halloween everyone!!! I dressed up this year as my own version of the Corpse Bride. It took over four hours to get into costume and makeup. We used blue and gray body paint, a skin and bones face prosthetic, a broken bone prosthetic for my arm, a maggots prosthetic for my stomach, a long gray wig, a bouquet of dead flowers, a spider web veil, and a wedding dress. It was a lot of work, and I couldn't have done it without the help of my amazing parents, but it was absolutely worth it! Halloween is my favorite holiday without a doubt and this was the best year yet!!! I really hope that you enjoy my performance of this spooky song and that you had a fantastic All Hallow's Eve!!! This video book has been reconfigured from files and file fragments salvaged from a failed external hard drive (650GB of 800GB existing, as of this writing, as unreadable information). "The Death of Depth" was an outcome of the birth of forkergirl's understanding of the usual location of her (and, therefore, her/the fork's) interactions: on the surface, at the entrance to the interaction, boundary position; "depth" continuously reconfigured as the yet-to-explore, the to-be-connected-with; for when something is cut into, the cutter and the interaction tend to be relocated to a surface that emerges; what is exposed by cut or entry becomes available for consideration, itself a form of interaction. The surface is suitable for study. I lived in Ma'adi, Egypt for approximately 2 years back in 1996-1997. I hadn't been back until May of 2011, and what a trip it was! We had literally purchased our flight tickets one week before the enormous protests began, which eventually ousted Hosni Mubarak from the Presidency. The revolution however had only just begun and is not over. After many hours contemplating our safety, we decided to continue on with the trip. We felt it would be a very interesting time to visit Egypt given the current political climate, voilence, and lack of a solid government. People were still uneasy, but there was still a sense of elation with the Egyptian people. While we were there I filmed a series of places we visited, including quite a bit of time driving around the Cairo/Giza/Ma'adi area. Some places you'll see: Pyramids at Giza, Old Cairo, Tahrir Square, Cairo, Giza, Ma'adi (including areas around Rd. 9), The Citadel, Step Pyramids at Saqqara, and so on.
