This composition (called L'ONDINE) was played on a Moog Ethervox theremin using a Boss RC-50 Loop Station. It was filmed in a single take using two cameras and the sound was fed directly to a 24 bit digital recording device (unfortunately the YT compression turned it into "mono"). The celestial harp-like sounds you hear, which are triggered by the MIDI application of the Ethervox, are produced by two modules, a Roland JV 2080 and a Roland Fantom XR.. + Informações

I call this composition LEMMINKAINEN'S DREAM. Lemminkainen was one of the heroes in the Finnish national epic known as the KALEVALA. The writer of The Lord Of The Rings, JRR Tolkien, based much of his vision of Middle Earth on ideas and images from the Kalevala which he had read as a teenager. He liked it so much he actually learned Finnish in order to read the book in its native language, and later went on to invent a language entirely of his own (the language of the Elves called "Quenya") which was based on Finnish. The kantele (pronounced "kan - teh - leh") is the national instrument of Finland and belongs to the family of instruments known as "psalteries". The one you see in this video is a 38 string, steel strung, electric kantele. It's magnetic pickups (which are eight inches long) were custom made by Jason Lollar for Bart Hopkin of Experimental Musical Instruments. If you are curious about them, visit Bart's website, windworld.com. The kantele is an extremely resonant instrument and larger "concert" models are provided with a damper consisting of a thick felt strip similar to what you might find on a piano, in order to mute the strings. I left the damper box open in the middle part of this video so you could see what it looks like. These electroacoustic kanteles bear little resemblance to the traditional 5 and 10 string folk instruments but they open up all sorts of doors for modern musicians. This is a short excerpt from the 8th century epic tale of BEOWULF. The instrument I am using to accompany myself is called a hurdy-gurdy , a popular instrument of medieval Europe. The hurdy-gurdy in this video was made for me by Alden and Cali Hackmann of Olympic Musical Instruments in Indianola, Washington, and is a fully equipped electro-acoustic instrument with a built-in sound console. Hurdy-gurdy players, like bagpipe players, cannot control the volume of their instruments which makes it difficult to use for accompanying the human voice but the intensity and sheer volume of the instrument also made it ideal for great halls and public places in ancient times. One advantage that it has is that it is a complete instrument, able to play melody, harmony and rhythm. The hurdy-gurdy in this video is plugged into an RSP Technologies Intelliverb processor which I control with a MIDI Ground Control foot switch. The only other instrument used in this video is a Moog Ethervox theremin. The original Beowulf epic was written in Old English which is no longer spoken and cannot be understood by English speakers today. I used a modern adaptation of the words for this video. For anyone who is interested, I have posted the text to my website, along with some closeup photos of the hurdy-gurdy. Dr. Samuel Hoffman took his 1929 RCA theremin with him when he moved from New York City to Los Angeles, California, in 1941. He eventually became world famous as "The Hollywood Thereminist" and the distinctive sound of his instrument can be heard on the soundtracks of over 40 major motion pictures of the 1940's and 50's. Alfred Hitchcock's SPELLBOUND (music by Miklos Rosza), the SciFi classic THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (music by Bernard Herrmann) and Cecile B. deMille's perennial THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, are just a few of the movies in which this theremin can be heard. I acquired this unique vintage instrument from the Hoffman family in 1998 and have carefully maintained it and enjoyed playing it ever since. It sounds today just the way it sounded when the late Dr. Hoffman played it at the "Casino In The Air" on top of mid-town Manhattan's Hotel Montclair in the 1930's. In order to give the camera a better view of the inside, for the purpose of this video, I removed the two cabinet doors (which normally remain closed). When Leon Theremin, the inventor of the theremin, came to America in 1927, he brought with him his assistant and business partner, Julius Goldberg. The RCA theremin you see in this video belonged to Mr. Goldberg, and he made several modifications to it over the years. He had custom "lightning bolt" antennas made for it but as you will see at the beginning of the video, I do not like using the jagged pitch antenna, and replace it with a standard RCA antenna before beginning to play. Goldberg also preferred a tone color that is closer to brass and reed instruments and altered the voltages that feed the vacuum tubes so his theremin would sound more trumpet-like than the standard RCA's. I believe he made these changes because he performed regularly in New York City in the early 30's and he may have thought the instrument had more audio/visual impact with his modifications. Up until the early 1980's this theremin remained the property of Julius Goldberg's widow who lived near Poughkeepsie, New York.
