Romeo and Juliet is an orchestral work composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It is styled an Overture-Fantasy, and is based on Shakespeare's play of the same name. Unlike Tchaikovsky's other major compositions, Romeo and Juliet does not have an opus number. In 1880, ten years after his first reworking of the piece, Tchaikovsky rewrote the ending and gave the piece the sub-title "Overture-Fantasia". La solemne Obertura 1812, Op. 49 es una obra orquestal realizada por el compositor ruso Piotr Ilich Chaikovski (1840-1893), compuesta entre septiembre y octubre de 1880. Su programa describe la victoria de Rusia en las guerras napoleónicas. Se estrenó en la catedral de Cristo el Salvador (Moscú) el 20 de agosto de 1882. En 1881 esa Iglesia fue consagrada para celebrar la Victoria rusa, y esta obra fue concebida para conmemorar los festejos por tal motivo. Los tempos del único movimiento de esta obra son Lento - Andante - Allegro giusto - Largo y Allegro vivace. La pieza comienza con una melodía religiosa de la iglesia ortodoxa rusa, la Plegaria al Salvador, que recuerda cómo la declaración de guerra contra Francia fue notificada al pueblo en los servicios religiosos de toda Rusia. Es inmediatamente seguida por un cántico solemne de deseo de victoria. Estos anuncios y la reacción del pueblo están reflejados en la novela Guerra y paz, de Lev Tolstói (que también describe la batalla de Borodino (el 7 de septiembre de 1812), donde Napoleón Bonaparte vence a las fuerzas rusas e invade Moscú).
