A nurse had pricked my finger for a drop of my blood. I passed out dozens of times since! It made me avoid doctors at all costs. Then, something supremely ironic happened. I found a lump in my breast when I was 28-years-old. I realized that if I avoided medical care any longer, my fear could actually kill me. A breast cancer diagnosis forced me to face my phobia so that I could live. I went through surgery, chemotherapy, and breast reconstruction. I started out screaming and crying for nearly two hours before each procedure. Today, I'm cancer free and I have learned how to deal with a medical phobia so that I could stay healthy! I hope that anyone who watches this knows that if you suffer from blood-injury-injection phobia, you can get past it. I did. It was tough, but it's possible! This is Part 1 of a speech to a class of medical school students about my experience. This was my first attempt at actually TAPING my speech -- and I'm sure you can tell.
