Peter Allen - Biography Peter Allen was born Peter Richard Woolnough on 10 February 1944 in the Australian country town of Tenterfield in New South Wales and grew up in nearby Armidale and later Lismore. He demonstrated an early talent for playing the piano by ear and by the age of 11 he was working part-time entertaining locals in the ladies lounge of the New England Hotel. Moving to Surfers Paradise at the age of 15, Peter met up with Chris Bell and together they became the Allen Brothers, a singing act styled on the US duo the Everly Brothers. By 1960 the Allen Brothers were based in Sydney and had gained a national audience on the music variety program Bandstand. In 1962 they embarked on an Asian tour and two years later while playing at the Hong Kong Hilton their act was seen by Judy Garland. Impressed by the Allen Brothers performance, she invited them to be the opening act for her US concert tour. In 1964 Peter became engaged to Garlands daughter Liza Minnelli and they married in 1967. Chris and Peter Allen, as they came to be billed, continued with their nightclub act in the United States during the 1960s and released their only album in 1968. In early 1970 Peter and Liza separated and, on the same day, Peter also officially ended his working relationship with Chris Bell. Peter Allen then turned to seriously pursue his songwriting abilities and to establish himself as a solo performer and recording artist.
