People Under the Stairs are an underground hip-hop group from Los Angeles, California. The group comprises two self-proclaimed b-boys, Thes One and Double K. Thes One (Chris Portugal) was born in Lima, Peru in 1977. His musical aliases include Uncle Thester, Supreme One, Thessoterrorist, and Lord Radio. Double K (Michael Turner, Jr.) is originally from Los Angeles, California, and was born in 1977. He is also known to go by K Jackson, Dub K, LA Mike, Mikey, Kaos, and Hale Bop. People Under the Stairs, or PUTS, have released three albums since 1998, and have since put out a record every two years(you guess when), with the exception of 2004. Myek. Hyek. And Dyek. Gesundheit! They have also moved to Basement Records, who will formally release their next album along with Tres Records. Tres Records was started by Chikaramanga & Sausen with the assistance of Thes One and has began releasing 12 singles and CDs for Thes One, Giant Panda, Lightheaded, and other artists. Although widely unrecognized, PUTS is often considered one of the hip-hop undergrounds most prominent acts, with a musical style similar to that of A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde Their album, Stepfather, was released on April 18, 2006. A false leak of the album was released on the internet on February 21, 2006. The leak was orchestrated by Thes One himself by recruiting members on the PUTS Online messageboard to spread the bad copy. Wes Craven wrote and directed this surrealistic horror-comedy, which was inspired by a true story of parents keeping their children locked in a basement for years. Fool (Brandon Adams), an African-American teen, breaks into the home of the wealthy landlords who evicted his family from a ghetto tenement. A fortune in gold coins is rumored to exist inside, but Fool discovers that the mansion is a chamber of horrors presided over by a pair of incestuous, serial killer siblings (Everett McGill and Wendy Robie). The twisted couple has also tried to raise a succession of kidnapped boys. Each botched effort is handled the same way -- the victim's eyes, ears and tongues are removed, and he's sent to live in the sealed-off basement, where a colony of similarly deformed "brothers" resides. Fool is able to avoid the evil lovers as he moves through the house's maze of hidden passageways. He discovers that the occupants have a daughter, Alice (AJ Langer), who has survived their abuse, so he rescues her and they attempt to free the "people under the stairs." Adams, who made his feature debut with in film, was familiar to viewers as the star of rock singer Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (1988).
