Santa Fe College student Zach Clauss presented on April 18 as part of the Research in Undergraduate Education 2012 Research & Creative Scholarly Projects Festival (Faculty Mentor: Mapi Cuevas) "The reduction of 3-methyl-2-pentanone consists of changing the keytone in the middle of the molecule to an alcohol with sodium borohydride. Some organic chemistry reactions have multiple products, where some are favored more over others. There are certain types of molecules that have molecular structures that are mirror images of each other or have parts that are mirror images of each other. The latter are referred to as diastereomers. At a first glance, one may think that these types of molecules have the same chance to be produced always; however, this is not the case. In the reduction of 3-methyl-2-pentanone we have two pairs of diastereomers that are produced. The investigation of my experiment is to see whether one pair is more predominate than the others. My experiment is not complete and I am currently working on finishing it in the summer. So far I have performed the reaction of sodium borohydride with 3-methyl-2-pentanone and extracted the product, 3-methyl-2-pentanol, into diethyl ether. At this point, I have distilled as much ether out as possible under the lab conditions I have. I am continuing to investigate whether one pair of diastereomers of 3-methyl-2-pentanol is more prevelant after the reaction or the other with the use of gas chromatography and thin layer .... + Informações
