The 90-ton rocket launched at 6:39 pm EDT, but US officials tell ABC News that 81 seconds into the launch, there was a substantially larger than expected flare and by ten minutes after launch, the rocket was no longer on several radar screens, including those of the National Military Command Center tracking system at the Pentagon. US officials say the missile is believed to have crashed into the sea on a southerly track, one official said debris did not fall near populated areas. The South Korean Defense Ministry said the rocket "broke apart and fell in pieces several minutes after lift-off" Early reports from South Korean officials indicate that some of the debris from the rocket fell near the Philippines, ten minutes after launch. Had the launch been successful, the third stage of the rocket was expected to burn up in the atmosphere about ten minutes after launch, with debris from stage two falling into the Pacific, north of the Philippines.
