"MIGRANT LAW MAY SEPARATE MARRIED COUPLES The Government will cap and kill applications by Australians to bring their overseas spouses into Australia a move which would see long-term separations of married couples unless the Opposition allows through the Senate tough new measures to curb applications. The Minister for Immigration, Mr Ruddock,said the draconian move,allowable under present law but never used in relation to spouses, would help curb huge increases in applications for spouses, some of which were shams, but others 'a fraud on Australians'. Under present practise,applications for offshore spouses to come are allowed regardless of the quota set.Mr Ruddock wants to enforce his quota by a cap and queue regulation, making applicants after the qouta is reached to wait, possibly for months, until heading the queue for next years intake. But in the face of Labor opposition in the Senate, he threatened to use his general cap and kill power to terminate applications made post-qouta.This would force Australians to apply again next year on equal terms with next year's applicants, causing indefinite separations. Sydney, Australia, October 2nd, 1989. Anti-gay campaigner Reverend Fred Nile led a march of some 1000 "christians" along Oxford St, the traditional route of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, ending at a stage, PA system and rally at Taylor Square. The marchers were met by a considerably larger counter-protest by the gay and lesbian community and their supporters. Apologies for bad TV reception in some sections!!! These are four TV news reports about the action. Despite the suggestions of some of the TV editorial, the counter-protest was predominantly a peaceful, humourous response to a direct provocation. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (an order of gay male nuns) literally rolled out a giant red carpet for Fred and his marchers. Fred Nile masks were handed out to the counter protestors, and chants such as "2-4-6-8, are you sure your priest is straight?" were taught to all. Fred had promoted his event as a "cleansing march", and many street signs on Taylor Square were wrapped in plastic "Glad Wrap" (aka "cling wrap). My favourite protest sign was one held behind Fred's head, while he was on stage, that said "People who have wet dreams should be castrated!". Photographer Jamie Dunbar, then working for the gay paper the "Sydney Star Observer", was on Fred's stage at Taylor Square capturing the event, but was suddenly overcome with anger and grabbed the microphone - this appears in several of the news reports. The impression I have recieved of him is that he is racist and he likes to talk a great deal. He reminded me of a politician in the 1990's in Australia called Pauline Hanson. She wasnt the brightest little cookie in the biscuit barrel. It was scary how many people actually followed her in the 90's, even people I knew and I did not have a clue they thought so extremely racist ideas were good. In the end she was good for a laugh, but she was sent to jail for fraud I believe. Apparently she was not the mastermind of her claims, she was a 'puppet without strings'.
