It's interesting to note the talent involved with the writing of past television themes. In the case of the tv western "Maverick" starring James Garner, Jack Kelly and later, Roger Moore, the credit goes to two very talented people, David Buttolph for his music and Paul Francis Webster for his lyrics. Each man had a distinguished career in music with Buttolph composing music for such tv shows as "Wagon Train", "77 Sunset Strip", "The Virginian" and scoring films such as John Wayne's "Horse Soldiers". This song enjoyed widespread popularity in the mid-1930s, when it was fashionable to dress well, dance, drink and smoke cigarettes. The mystique surrounding a smoky room was always good for the imaginative romantic. The song was introduced by Gloria Grafton (who also recorded it for RCA-Victor) in a 1934 crime drama (stage) called 'Kill That Story' by Philip Dunning and George Abbott. Perhaps, and in fact, we know, it is because he truly makes it his own. And as always, Gene, such a giving man, shares the gift with us. Our friend, "danna," dubbed in some lovely harmony parts after I originally recorded this footage of Gene at his home with my little camcorder.
