PATTI AUSTIN singing "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", a 1933 classic song of all times. "SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES" is a show tune written by American composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Otto Harbach for their 1933 operetta Roberta. It was originally recorded by Gertrude Niesen, on 13 October 1933 on the Victor label 24454. It was performed by Irene Dunne for the 1935 film adaptation, costarring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Randolph Scott. It has been covered by numerous artists, beginning with Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra with Bob Lawrence on vocal, which went to the top of the charts in 1934, and including Nat "King" Cole who first covered it in 1946. It also featured in "Lovely to Look At", a 1952 remake of "Roberta", where it was sung by Kathryn Grayson. Possibly the most famous version was recorded in 1958 by the doo wop group The Platters, which became a number one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 and reached number three on the R&B charts in 1959. In 1956, Vic Damone covered this song with a very dramatic and different rendition, which became one of his most famous songs. For bandleader Ray Conniff it was one of his signature songs during his career. A 1972 remake by British band Blue Haze also became popular. Saxophone player Boots Randolph did an instrumental version of the song on the B-side of his LP Yakety Sax. Bryan Ferry recorded a quavering, briefly popular version of the song in 1974 on the album Another Time, Another Place, which reached number 17 on the UK .... + Informações

Austin cut her debut LP, End of a Rainbow, for Creed Taylor's CTI label in 1976, followed by Havana Candy in 1977 and Body Language in 1980. She sang lead vocals for Japanese koto player Yutaka Yokokura on "Love Light" in 1978, did a duet with Michael Jackson on "It's the Falling in Love" for Off the Wall, and sang "The Closer I Get to You" on Tom Browne's album in 1979. Austin dueted with George Benson on "Moody's Mood for Love" in 1980. She sang backgrounds for sessions by Houston Person, Noel Pointer, Ralph McDonald, Angela Bofill, and Roberta Flack. Austin did vocals on Quincy Jones' The Dude LP in 1981, and was featured on the hit "Razzamatazz." This is a 1980 hit from "The Dude" written by Stevie Wonder sung by Grammy Winner of 2008 Best Jazz Vocal Patti Austin. She is doing all the background vocals on three of her four tracks from The Dude which are Betcha' Wouldn't Hurt Me, Somethin' Special, Razzamatazz and Turn On The Action. Somethin' Special uses male backgrounds. She didn't sing an actual duet with James Ingram who was heavily featured and won a Grammy for The Dude until her Every Home Should Have One album released February of 1981 It was "Baby, Come To Me". Patti also did a duet with Luther Vandross on the album that Quincy released before "The Dude" "Sounds... And Stuff Like That!!" and that song was "I'm Gonna Miss You In The Morning."
