To do this, you can perform the following: 1) Just grab each wing and pull them gently apart until the middle part inflates or expands, or 2) try blowing on the bottom of the crane to inflate it that way (doesn't work as well for me). A quick tutorial of how to make an origami paper crane. This video is used for my 2010 ArtPrize project entitled "Cranes for Kids." "Cranes for Kids" at the Grand Rapids YMCA. Vote: 35121 "Cranes for Kids" is an experiment intended to deliver wishes to children. In Ancient Japanese folklore anyone who folds 1000 paper cranes in their lifetime will be granted one wish from a crane; a long life or recovery from illness. These cranes have been folded by children from various Grand Rapids area YMCA summer programs, caring individuals in the community, and yours truly. The goal is to collectively fold 100000 paper cranes and donate them to the children at the new Helen Devos Children's Hospital opening in 2011. UPDATE: The Facebook group, Students Rebuild and the Bezos family foundation (along with other foundations and anonymous donators) had to up their goal to 1 million Paper Cranes instead of 100000 and gave out $1000000 to the relief efforts! A strategy video. Make sure you've got 53 cranes when you leave the tables. Make sure you have 150 cranes when you leave the first room. (That includes the crane in the bird's mouth.) Enter the bathroom using the door I used -- that way around you will probably grab the 50 the birds are carrying without even trying. Make sure you have 877 cranes and at least a minute left when you enter the final (middle) room. Once you're in the final room, if you see a big yellow crane flying around make sure you grab it right away; they are good at getting away. They can even pass through the wall back into the first room. You may need to quick run back to the first room to collect a big yellow crane or two at the end.
