Seeing something in Noel Dinn's lyrics that most people would probably never see, I added disturbingly graphic images of "children of the night" who could not resist the temptation of something calling them, even if it meant their own ultimate destruction. Written by Noel Dinn of St. John's, Newfoundland [1948-1993] and recorded by Pamela Morgan of Grand Falls, NL, on her debut solo album (On A Wing And A Prayer ©1995 Pamela Morgan Publishing, a division of Amber Music, Topsail, NL). Born in St. John's in 1948, Noel Dinn was the co-founder, in 1975, with Pamela Morgan, of the seminal Newfoundland band Figgy Duff. For the next two decades the group toured the island, honing a distinctive blend of traditional and contemporary music. They collected old songs and tunes along the way, performing them in new musical settings that included drums, amplifiers and electric guitars. For the better part of 20 years, Noel and Pamela Morgan conducted research around Newfoundland, in search of the real and sometimes forgotten folk music. Noel studied the rhythm and drive in the music and painstakingly translated it for the younger musicians who dedicated themselves to the cause. To say simply that Noel was the leader of Figgy Duff is a colossal understatement. He was the band's leader, arranger, manager, booking agent, inspiration, drive (and driver), banker, secretary, not to mention drummer and pianist. Pamela Morgan and Figgy Duff perform Andy Vine's musical tribute from their 1989 album Weather Out The Storm. Andy Vine's notes: The lady in question in the song is Elizabeth Goudie. She was delighted when she heard my song and made the comment, "From now on I'll think of you as one of my sons." I regret never having met her face to face. She was a wonderful lady. However, the song has brought me much joy and has acquired a life of its own. It was recently recorded by the Northern Harmony choir from Happy Valley-Goose Bay and has appeared in various collections of songs. The song also inspired a dance piece set to the Figgy Duff recording. Additional notes: Elizabeth Goudie (née Blake) [1902-1982] was born in Mud Lake, Labrador, and between 1963 and 1971 wrote her autobiography, Woman Of Labrador (Peter Martin Associates, Ottawa, 1973). Her story of life in the Labrador bush was considered so important for its historical record that she was awarded an honourary doctor of laws degree in 1975 by Memorial University of St. John's, Newfoundland. Wings for Songs: Ginny Ryan with Pamela Morgan Ginny Ryan and Pamela Morgan recently spent several seasons working together to create a CD of songs that Ginny wrote and collected over a span of many years. The result, "Great Wings in Flight," was released in December 2010. At Words in Edgewise in February 2011 they shared the trajectory a song can travel from the inspiration that gives it birth to its eventual independent existence out in the world. As they performed four or five songs from the album, they describe what they drew upon and how they collaborated to bring this project to completion.
