DEAN: In sports, double amputee Oscar Pistorius came up seconds short in Olympics qualifying earlier this week. The South African runner needed a time of 45.55 seconds, but could only manage 47.78 over the 400 meter distance. [Oscar Pistorius, South African Athlete]: "I think I am a bit disappointed. I didn't expect it to be wonderful but I didn't expect it to be that bad. But I need to be realistic." Pistorius, whose condition stems from a congenital disorder, has been given more time to make the team. However he told reporters his chances to make the 2012 Games are more realistic. And in taekwondo, Mexico's Guillermo Perez seems a sure bet. You see, Perez has crafted his martial art skills from the tender age of five. Now, the entire nation roots him on. [Guillermo Perez, Mexican Taekwondo Athlete]: "I started (practicing) this sport I think, when I was young, because I used to see films about martial arts and I liked them a lot. In particular I used to see Bruce Lee films. He used to appear throwing kicks and I was a bit hyperactive when I was a child. My mother decided that I should practice and I liked throwing kicks. That's when my career as a taekwondo athlete began. It's been a 23-year long career which I have enjoyed a lot and we have accomplished very good results." Tuesday 1st--Thursday 10th April 2008: 30 promising young athletes from across the UK have been personally selected by Dame Kelly Holmes to attend an intensive ten-day camp held at Loughborough University this week. The runners will each receive elite training and advice from the double Olympic gold medallist herself, in the hope that they too may go on to become the UK's future Olympic stars. 'On Camp with Kelly' is a mentoring and training scheme, giving middle distance runners the opportunity to learn and benefit from Dame Kelly's own knowledge and experiences as a world-class athlete. The scheme, which the Olympic champion began in 2004, was originally developed for promising female athletes -- but now for the first time has also been expanded to include male athletes as well.
