Odetta on "The Johnny Cash Show," August 30, 1969. The first song she performs is based on a Negro "field blues" song known simply as "Black Woman," then duets with Cash on "Shame And Scandal In The Family," which was written by a calypso artist who went by Sir Lancelot, in the 40s. Thanks to the Commenters who helped me ID these songs. I'm nothing without you!. + Informações

From the 1965 album, 'Odetta Sings Dylan'. Odetta was born on New Year's Eve 1930 and passed away December 2nd, 2008. I met her at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival in 1979 when we were both performers at the three-day event. We were on the same bus from the festival grounds to the performers' hotel late on Friday night, along with members of Sweet Honey In The Rock and the bluesman, Johnny Shines, among others. Odetta led us in the singing of gospel songs and songs related to the Civil Rights movement. I took the bass part in the harmonies. After a couple songs, Odetta, who was seated directly behind me, clapped and massaged my back, saying to the others, "Did you hear this one?" It was a sweet moment for me. When I learned of Odetta's death, I remembered her hand on my back. DL. + Informações

"Odetta Sings Dylan is the 1965 album by American folk singer Odetta, an entire album of covers of Bob Dylan songs. In addition to a number of well known Dylan compositions, a couple of fairly obscure songs were included, including "Baby, I'm in the Mood for You". This album was re-released on CD by BMG Camden (773802) in August 3, 2000. "Blowin' in the Wind" (which first appeared on Odetta Sings Folk Songs, 1963) and "Paths of Victory" (Odetta Sings of Many Things, 1964) were added as bonus tracks." Odetta -- vocals, guitar Bruce Langhorne -- guitar, tambourine Peter Childs -- guitar Les Grinage -- bass. + Informações

her rendition of the popular american abolitionist song 'Battle Hymn Of The Republic', from the album Best Of The Vanguard Years. Odetta is one of the most influential artists of the 20th Century. By combining the power and grace of an opera singer with the earthiness of a blues singer and the conviction of a folk singer, Odetta became a commanding, stirring singer unlike any other. Odetta released her first album, Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues, in 1956. This is some two years before the beginning of the folk revival with which she is usually associated. The power of her singing seems to connect her to an earlier folk music, more elemental and raw than her late-50s and early-60s peers. Unlike the Highwaymen or other popular interrupters of classic folk songs, Odetta seems closer in both approach and presentation to Leadbelly. Her interest in folk music appeared to be less of a personal "revival" or awakening, than a continuation of a living tradition. She was referred to as the "female Leadbelly." Bob Dylan was major inspired by Odetta - - in 1956 her album, "ODETTA Sings Ballads & Blues," inspired him to trade in his electric guitar for a Gibson acoustic guitar, and got him into folk .. + Informações

Odetta, Odetta, "She Moved Through the Fair" from One Grain of Sand (1963)

Odetta Holmes, (December 31, 1930 December 2, 2008), known as Odetta, was an African-American singer, actress, guitarist, songwriter, and a human rights activist whose career spanned some 64 years. She was an extraordinary woman. This song is from Odetta's early folk music period. It has sentimental value for me as well, as my first date with my husband was to hear her live at a folk club! This song, "She Moved Through the Fair," has several versions. It is a traditional Irish folk song. Its original author is unknown, but the published lyrics were adapted (or mostly written?) by Padraic Colum. There have been other excellent renditions of this song, Sinéad O'Connor's and Loreena McKennitt's come to mind, but this was recorded 45 years ago! Lyrics: My own love said to me My mother won't mind And my Father won't slight you For your lack of kind Then she stepped away from me And this she did say It will not be long, love Till our wedding day. He stepped away from me And he moved through the Faie And fondly I watched him Move here and move there She went he turned homeward With one star awake As the swans in the evening Move over the lake. The people were saying No two e'er were wed But one has a sorrow That never was said And she smiled as she passed me With her goods and her geae rAnd that was the last That I saw of my dear. I dreamed it last night ] That my true love came in So softly she entered Her feet made no din She came close beside me And this she did say It will .... + Informações

On 7/7/07 in her 77th year, folk blues legend Odetta performed a free hour and a half set at Governors Island, NYC, kicking off the Folks on the Island four concert series sponsored by Trinity Church of Wall Street. The house in New Orleans is probably a high rise luxury condo now with more expensive whores and designer blue jeans but Odetta brings us back to before the flood, and before this song was a hit for the Animals. Long before Janis Joplin was singing Down on Me, there was Odetta in 1959 recording it on vinyl for Janis to take it from . There was Odetta soulfully growling Poor Little Jesus and singing Masters of War with force and conviction even beyond Dylan's. Of course, she sang her own non-violent edit omitting Dylan's final verse of murderous malediction, "And I hope that you die and your death will come soon......" "When I was a young girl" is another folk classic I first heard on the LP Folksy Nina (Simone) . Every 60's folk singer owes a debt to Odetta. Thanks for concert. It was great seeing you. One and a half hour Concert DVD available. Send me a message through YouTube if interested.. + Informações

Lyrics: Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me I'm not sleepy and there ain't no place I'm going to Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me In the jingle-jangle morning I'll come following you Though I know that evening's empire Has returned into sand Vanished from my hand Left me blindly here to stand But still not sleeping My weariness amazes me I am branded on my feet I have no one to meet And the ancient empty street's Too dead for dreaming Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me I'm not sleepy and there ain't no place I'm going to Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me In the jingle-jangle morning I'll come following you Take me on a trip upon your Magic swirling ship My senses have been stripped My hands can't feel to grip My toes too numb to step Wait only for my boot heels to be wandering I'm ready to go anywhere I am ready for to fade Into my own parade Cast your dancing spell my way I promise to go under it Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me I'm not sleepy and there ain't no place I'm going Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me In the jingle-jangle morning I'll come following you Though you might hear laughing, spinning, swinging Madly through the sun It's not aimed at anyone It's just escaping on the run And but for the sky, there are no fences facing And if you hear vague traces Of skipping reels of rhyme To your tambourine in time I wouldn't pay it any mind It's just a ragged clown behind And if to you he looks blind I wouldn .... + Informações
