Regarding this song, here is what Phil wrote on the album jacket: "My Marxist friends can't understand why I wrote this song and that's probably one of the reasons why I'm not a Marxist. After the assassination Fidel Castro aptly pointed out that only fools could rejoice at such a tragedy, for systems, not men, are the enemy." This song means alot to me. I think its a perfect song to represent my father at his passing. My father had spent his life majorly involved in politics and was a devout liberal. My father was also involved in sports his entire life. That is, until we recently discovered paintball and started up a team, the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers of Illinois. His life revolved around these 2 things. He loved helping people, and he loved paintball. These 2 things are what made him truely happy. These past few years, he has said, were the happiest years of his life, simply because he got to bond with me and my uncle, his brother, Stephen. Philip David Ochs (December 19, 1940--April 9, 1976) was a US protest singer (or, as he preferred, a "topical singer"), songwriter, musician and recording artist who was known for his sharp wit, sardonic humor, earnest humanism, political activism, insightful and alliterative lyrics, and haunting voice. He wrote hundreds of songs in the 1960s and released eight LP record albums in his lifetime. He performed at many political events, anti-Vietnam War and civil rights rallies, student events, and at organized labor events over the course of his career, in addition to many concert appearances at such venues as New York City's The Town Hall and Carnegie Hall. Politically, Ochs described himself as a "left social democrat" who turned into an "early revolutionary" after the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, which had a profound effect on his state of mind.[1] He was often seen as a radical and also a patriot ? though he was also interested in differing political philosophies as well as journalism, and was an avid fan of music and movies. After years of prolific writing in the 1960s, Ochs' mental stability declined in the 1970s and eventually he succumbed to a number of problems including bipolar disorder, depression, and alcoholism, and he took his own life in 1976.. + Informações

Of all the protest singers who emerged from the Greenwich Village scene of New York City in the early 1960s, few -then or in retrospective - were as genuine or as committed as Phil Ochs. Ochs may have been in the shadow of another Mid Western boy, but his songs stand up to the comparison and many are as relevant today as when he wrote them. While others sought the hit parade, Ochs stayed true to his beliefs, singing on the university campuses and on the protest marches. To a degree this denied him the widepsread popularity others chased, which at times frustrated him. As Tom Paxton put it: Ochs believed he was next in line - and then he died. "Amchitka" is a 2009 two-CD release of a recording of Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Phil Ochs performing an October 16, 1970, benefit concert at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, Canada. (note: the opening titles on the video incorrectly name the date as 1972). The event funded Greenpeace's protests of 1971 nuclear weapons tests by the US Atomic Energy Commission at Amchitka, Alaska. Irving Stowe, one of Greenpeace's founding members, organized the benefit concert with the assistance of Joan Baez. She could not appear, but she connected Stowe with Joni Mitchell, and Mitchell requested her boyfriend of the time, James Taylor, join the concert. The Stowe family held on to tapes of the concert, but were not able to obtain the necessary clearances until John Timmins, brother of Cowboy Junkies members, became involved with Greenpeace. Timmins was instrumental in contacting Mitchell and Taylor's representatives and working out the necessary permissions to release the concert.
