Here is some vintage video clips of the Comet roller coaster on opening day in 1947. There is also some bonus clips showing the Comet Jr kiddie coaster which opened in 1951. Lincoln Park closed in 1987 and what is left of the Comet can still be seen on the parks grounds. Very sad ending to this once popular amusement park.. + Informações

54 1793: Invention of the cotton gin. 1808: US abolished the slave trade. The value of slaves increased to $2000 by 1850. Despite only 25% of South owning slaves the existence of slaves reminded poor whites that there was a class below them in society. Slavery permeated all aspects of Southern life, therefore, an attack on slavery was seen as an attack on the South. 1819: 11 'free' states, 11 'slave' states. The senate was even but the North had begun to dominate the House with its rapidly growing population. 1820: Missouri Compromise. Missouri, a slave state, would join the union with Maine, a free state, to maintain the balance. No slavery was to be subsequently allowed North of the 36'30' parallel. The issue was not resolved, merely delegated to a later date. 1833: Britain abolished slavery throughout its empire. Late 1840s: Growing tension due to: California and New Mexico in 1848, The Wilmot Proviso 1846, which excluded slavery from any territory acquired from Mexico, was passed in the House but defeated in the Senate. The Calhoun Doctrine 1847, argued that territories were the common property of all states, that any US citizen was free to settle in the US with its property (slaves), that the states were sovereign, they had the right to secede if the North ignored Southern interests and threatened slavery, then the South was justified in leaving the Union. 1850: Compromise. We took of from Sussex Airport (FWN) at near gross weight in the Cessna 172 Skyhawk and headed east toward the Hudson. No sooner did we reach cruising altitude that it was time to start descending again to duck beneath the Newark class B airspace. We made a 90 degree right turn onto the Hudson and proceeded over the George Washington Bridge southbound at 1000 feet on the Jersey side. We continued southbound past Jersey City and the Statue of Liberty. Then we made a turn to the left and crossed the Hudson toward Brooklyn. We flew south over Brooklyn to see the area we live in and then proceeded around Coney Island and around Brooklyn one more time. Then we crossed over the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and headed northbound on the Hudson. After crossing over Governor's Island we continued up the Hudson on the Manhattan side passing the financial district and ground zero. Soon Chelsea Piers and the Empire State Building dominated the view. Beyond that we could see Times Square and Central Park. Further north we saw Yankees Stadium and the Throgs Neck Bridge. Once far enough to the north we climbed and turned westbound to head directly to Lincoln Park airport where we had lunch. We returned to Sussex via Sparta VOR from Lincoln Park.. + Informações
