Synopsis::Shuji is the popular guy who gets along with everyone, from the jerks to the nerds to the just plain weird. The one person Shuji cannot stand is Akira. To Shuji, Akira is just plain annoying. He laughs, talks and acts funny. Things heat up when a new student comes to school. Her name is Kotani Nobuko, a girl who has no self confidence at all and is content at being made fun of and bullied in school. Shuji and Akira come to an accord that in order to make use of their "youth" they will "produce" Nobuko as the next popular girl. One of the conditions, however, is that nobody should find out that they are working together as a team to make this concept possible. Unveiled here is the story of true friendship between three unlikely candidates who would not have been friends if not given the special circumstances. I'd never even heard of these people before, but you could tell this performance was something special for audience and musicians alike. Charlie Chin & Nobuko Miyamoto were part of a group called Yellow Pearl, with Chris Ijima. Tadashi Nakamura's documentary short "A Song For Ourselves" was about the life and music of Chris Ijima. At the premiere, they sang one of Chris' songs, "We Are the Children," a folk song which Chris & Nobuko performed on the Mike Sullivan Show (with an introduction by John Lennon). For more information, visit www.janm.org Nobuko Miyamoto (b. 1939) is a dancer and musician who found her political and artistic voice in the Asian American movement. JoAnne Nobuko Miyamoto began her career as a dancer on Broadway in "Flower Drum Song" and in films like "West Side Story" and "The King and I." After working with director Antonello Branca on Seize the Time, a radical docufiction film about the Black Panthers, and meeting activist Yuri Kochiyama, Miyamoto became deeply involved in Asian American activism. She teamed up with musician Chris Ijima, traveling the country as a part of "Chris and Jo," playing music for Asian American audiences. They recorded the album "Grain of Sand" with Charlie Chin in 1973. She settled in Los Angeles and continued to perform music with Benny Yee in a group called Warriors of the Rainbow. In the late 1970s, Miyamoto and Yee collaborated on the first Asian American musical called "Chop Suey," which followed the story of a Chinese American girl's struggle to find her voice. This was the first project of Miyamoto's multi-ethnic performing arts organization Great Leap, which was founded to promote Asian American performing arts.
