My presentation highlights the art, architecture and music of the impressionist period. First we see the Eiffel tower, constructed in 1889 and designed by Gustave Eiffel. He was inspired by the recent advent of the use of iron in construction. Next we see starry night over the Rhône by van Gogh. He painted this masterwork in 1888. He was inspired by the recently invented gas lights that had been installed along the waterfront which created interesting lighting effects for him to capture on canvas. The music is Gymnopédie No.1 by Erik Satie, composed in 1888. This piece is widely credited as being one of the precursors of modern ambient music, and uses interesting chord progressions that were considered innovative in the time when the piece was composed. All three works are tied together for me by the colour dark blue -- the blue of the night sky as the Eiffel tower soars to the highest point in Paris; The blue of the night sky in Van Gogh's beautiful artwork, and the blue tone of the Gymnopédie that ambles sadly along its melody. These artworks/designs were not immediately popular in their time -- the Eiffel tower was hated by architects of the time, Satie was widely ignored by his contemporaries, and van Gogh committed suicide at 37 without having his genius acknowledged. Yet today they are accepted as important and innovative artists and designers of the impressionist period.. + Informações
