In this overture, the composer, as he says in his autobiography, is eager to reproduce "the legendary and heathen aspect of the holiday, and the transition from the solemnity and mystery of the evening of Passion Saturday to the unbridled pagan-religious celebrations of Easter Sunday morning". It had its première in Moscow in November 1900. The story is by Pushkin and was chosen as a centenary tribute to the great Russian poet. In this exotic fairy story the Tsar is persuaded to cast his wife and their new son into the sea in a cask, believing the child to be a monster. They land on an island where Gvidon rescues a swan from a hawk; the swan is in fact a princess under a spell. She turns him into a bumble bee and he flies off to find the Tsar. This provides the famous interlude "The Flight of the Bumble Bee". He stings his wicked aunts who had hatched the plot and are trying to prevent the Tsar visiting the island. Gvidon then frees the Swan Princess from her enchantment and the Tsar arrives to bless the happy couple and reclaim his wife. Capriccio espagnol, Op. 34, is the common Western title for an orchestral work based on Spanish folk melodies and written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1887. Rimsky-Korsakov originally intended to write the work for a solo violin with orchestra, but later decided that a purely orchestral work would do better justice to the lively melodies. The Russian title is ????????? ?? ????????? ???? (literally, Capriccio on Spanish Themes). The Capriccio consists of five movements and is scored for 2 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes (one doubling English horn), 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, harp and strings. The work has five movements: The first movement, Alborada, is a festive and exciting dance, typically from traditional asturian music to celebrate the rising of the sun. It features the clarinet with two solos, and later features a solo violin with a solo similar to the clarinet's. The second movement, Variazioni, begins with a melody in the horn section. Variations of this melody are then repeated by other instruments and sections of the orchestra. The third movement, Alborada, presents the same asturian dance as the first movement. The two movements are nearly identical, in fact, except that this movement has a different instrumentation and key. Variations on a theme by Michael Glinka, composed by Rimsky-Korsakov in 1878 during his (11-year lasting!) period as head of the military bands in the Russian army. One of the realy well composed and outstanding original pieces for oboe and wind band. Just listen to the colorful instrumentation and the virtuoso oboe part, and keep in mind that Igor Stravinsky (born in 1882) later became a student of Rimsky-Korsakov and got his training in counterpoint and instrumentation from this "giant" in Russian music life.
