The Trevi Fountain is one of Rome's most iconic attractions and it's easy to see why so many romances began here or were renewed around this amazing and beautiful structure. The fountain was completed in 1762 but the water that flows through it comes from a Roman aqueduct that dates back to the 1st century BC. Tradition has it that by tossing 3 coins into the fountain you will 1) be assured of returning to Rome, 2) fall in love with an Italian sweetheart, and 3) marry them. The Trevi Fountain is the largest baroque fountain in the city, and it is one of the most famous fountains in the whole world. A fountain at this location was originally designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1692 under Pope Urban VIII, but was never competed due to the Pope's death. Nicola Salvi began work on a new fountain in 1732, however he died in 1751 with the fountain unfinished. Pietro Bracci completed the fountain in in 1762 setting the imperious Oceanus (god of water) and his shell chariot. The tritons and horses provide symmetrical balance.
