Nick Ashford has passed away at age 70. Ashford paired professionally with his wife, Valerie, to form Ashford Simpson, a songwriting and performing Motown duo. Ashford co-wrote many Motown hit singles with his wife, including "Ainapos;t No Mountain High Enough," "Ainapos;t Nothing Like the Real Thing," and "Youapos;re All I Need To Get By." Over four decades, the duo produced and wrote songs for Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson the Miracles, and Gladys Knight the Pips, among others. More recently, they were given writing credit on Amy Winehouseapos;s album Back to Black for the single "Tears Dry on Their Own." Valerie Simpson's was moved to make remarks at the funeral of her husband since 1974 Nickolas Ashford at which famed Pastor Calvin Butts presided. "I've got a lot to say about a great man. He was my soul mate. He was the man of my life. I'm going to miss my honey. I know he's looking down on us. I know he's happy." The service began with a solo by singer Roberta Flack, who hugged Simpson following the moving vocal of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Actresses Phylicia Rashad recited Maya Angelou's "When Great Trees Fall." "You and Nick showed so much love to people you didn't even know," actress Tichina Arnold (Everybody Hates Chris/Martin) told Simpson before singing a powerful rendition of "I'm Too Close" with singer Victor Cook. Celebrities who attended: Susan Taylor, Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley, Alvin Ailey's Judith Jamison, Actor Michael Douglas, Edgar Bronfman, Jr. and "Late Show With David Letterman" bandleader Paul Shaffer. Nick Ashford, who with his wife Valerie Simpson wrote some of Motown's most powerful love duets, died Monday in a New York hospital. He was almost 70 and had been undergoing radiation treatments for throat cancer. Ashford and Simpson wrote Motown's two favorite "Ain't" songs, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," along with "You're All I Need To Get By." They also had a long singing career, scoring their biggest chart hit with 1984's "Solid (As a Rock)" and later settling into a long run at clubs and cabarets. Despite his commercial success, Marvin Gaye was troubled by internal conflict and relationship problems. The first two clips, from Marvin Gaye: What's Going On, explore a difficult period in Marvin's life, when his first marriage was on the rocks. The remaining clips are extended versions of interviews with people who knew Marvin during his time at Motown. Gladys Knight, of Gladys Knight and the Pips, worked with Marvin at Motown from the mid '60s to early '70s. He was 70 years old. While Ashford was cremated a few days earlier and his body wasn't there, his spirit was alive as friend after friend and musician after musician held up the award-winning singer in song.
