Het Nederlands Forensisch Instituut onderzoekt de mogelijkheden van het programma PhotoDNA. Deze door Microsoft ontwikkelde software maakt het mogelijk om dezelfde afbeeldingen te vinden ondanks verschillen in grootte of bestandstype. In grote fotoverzamelingen wordt dezelfde foto vaak onder verschillende bestandstypen en in verschillende groottes opgeslagen ten gevolge van bijvoorbeeld het bewerken, transporteren en verkleinen van de afbeelding. PhotoDNA versnelt het doorzoeken van grote verzamelingen afbeeldingen en kan daardoor een efficiencyslag opleveren bij het onderzoek naar afbeeldingen van kindermisbruik. + Informações

Er zijn in de zaak Vaatstra honderden DNA-profielen aangetroffen die overeenkomsten hebben met het DNA van de moordenaar van Marianne Vaatstra. Dat zegt onderzoeker Ate Kloosterman van het NFI, waar op dit moment een DNA-verwantschapsonderzoek plaatsvindt. De honderden profielen zullen nu verder onderzocht worden om te kijken of het gaat om een familielid van de dader. Via bijvoorbeeld een vader of een broer van de moordenaar probeert justitie deze moord op te lossen. Marianne Vaatstra werd in 1999 bij Veenklooster verkracht en vermoord. Het is de eerste moordzaak in Nederland waarbij het verwantschapsonderzoek wordt ingezet. Dit is sinds 1 april wettelijk toegestaan. The earthquake in Haiti left millions of families without adequate shelter in January 2010. In response, humanitarian agencies provided one of the most rapid emergency shelter distribution efforts ever mounted. In the first six months, Shelter Cluster agencies reached nearly 2.2 million people through the distribution of tarpaulins, tents, toolkits, ropes, kitchen sets, blankets, sleeping mats and the construction of transitional shelters. By 10 November, Shelter Cluster agencies increased this figure to more than 2.6 million. These efforts were achieved not only because of the extraordinary efforts of humanitarian agencies, but as well by the coordination provided by the Shelter Cluster, which was convened by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). Yet what exactly is the Shelter Cluster, how does it work, and what is the role of the IFRC as convener? This film aims to explain these questions by reviewing the response of the Shelter Cluster and its main coordination mechanism, the Shelter Coordination Team (SCT). This is Northwest Film Institutes' entry into the "I Am Free Enterprise" video contest sponsored by the US Chamber of Commerce and Youtube. Please view this video as many times as possible to help NFI finish in the top 25 and earn a chance at winning seed funds that will see the school get launched. It features NFI founder and 42 year Hollywood film producer, Ted Parvin. NFI is a registered non-profit, 501(c)(3) educational corporation, currently seeking seed funding. NFI would create over 20 quality year-round jobs in a region of the US hit particularly hard by the recent economic downturn - North Idaho. In addition, NFI would provide new cultural and educational opportunities to hundreds of students, and be a unique tool for the work-force retraining of displaced loggers, mill workers and miners. The NFI concept is to have a core faculty made up of credited film industry professionals, both working and retired, and offer students hands-on experience with the same equipment they will find on a Hollywood film set.
