"Moonlight in Vermont" is a popular song about the US state of Vermont, written by John Blackburn and Karl Suessdorf and published in 1943. The lyrics are very unusual for an American pop song of the 1940s, because they do not rhyme and are impersonal, focusing mostly on the sensory appeal of the Vermont countryside while alluding briefly to romance. Nelson Smock Riddle, Jr. (June 1, 1921 -- October 6, 1985) was an American arranger, composer, bandleader and orchestrator whose career spanned from the late 1940s to the mid 1980s. It was his signature sound and iconic arrangements that defined a generation and his work for Capitol Records kept such vocalists as Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Peggy Lee, Johnny Mathis, Rosemary Clooney and Keely Smith household names. His multi-Grammy award winning albums with Linda Ronstadt proved that the Riddle sound transcended the generation gap. Nelson Riddle died shortly before the release of his third album with Linda in 1985. Riddle was born in Oradell, New Jersey, the only child of Marie Albertine Riddle and Nelson Smock Riddle, Sr., and later moved to nearby Ridgewood. Following his father's interest in music, he began taking piano lessons at age eight and trombone lessons at age fourteen. Riddle and his family had a summer house in Rumson, New Jersey. He enjoyed Rumson so much that he convinced his parents to allow him to attend high school there for his senior year. After his graduation from Rumson High School, Riddle spent his late teens and early 20s playing trombone in and occasionally arranging for various local dance bands, culminating in his association with the Charlie Spivak Orchestra. Nelson Riddle was a well-known American bandleader, arranger and orchestrator. He provided arrangements for Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Peggy Lee and Keely Smith and many others. His rendition of Lisbon Antigua was the number one song for 1956, staying in the number one chart position for four weeks. He arranged three albums for Linda Rondstat in the 80s, all of which were best sellers. This selection first appeared on the album The Best Of Nelson Riddle, released in 1962. He won three Grammy awards, the last posthumously in 1986.. + Informações

Nelson honed his craft in the latter days of the big band era and then was hired by Capitol Records to do some arranging for some of their artists. One of his first assignments was to assist Les Baxter on a record date with Nat King Cole. The result of that session was Nat's "Mona Lisa", and from that point forward, Nelson became one of the leading staff arrangers and orchestra conductors in the US. On occasion Nelson would record on his own, and he even had a #1 hit with "Lisbon Antigua" in December of 1955. Nelson Riddle has arranged music and conducted the orchestra on some of the most famous popular recordings in music history for the likes not only of Nat King Cole, but Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald and many others. In 1960 he composed the theme music for a new television series starring Martin Milner and George Maharis called "Route 66". Nelson Riddle was an American arranger, conductor and orchestrator who worked with some of the biggest names in music. His most famous 'route companion' no doubt was Frank Sinatra, mainly during the sixties and early seventies. But the list of singers for which he arranged music is immense : Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Mathis, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Jack Jones, Keely Smith and Rosemary Clooney are just a few icons on his impressive 'palmares'. Riddle also recorded some albums with his own orchestra and occasionally worked for radio and television. (His theme for the TV show "Route 66" became some kind of 'cult tune' and he also arranged most of the music used on "Batman" (tv series mid sixties). His style of arranging (where the saxophone plays a major role) is quite distinctive and Sinatra fans will surely recognize the typical sound that can be found on many successful Sinatra albums as well. Here Mr Riddle brings us one of the best (if not "the" best!) arrangements ever recorded of the 1972 Musical themesong "Cabaret" (which starred Liza Minelli in the leading role).
