Here is the 'Pas d'esclave' from the Bavarian State Ballet's (Bayerische Staatsballett) production of the full-length "Le Corsaire" performed by Natalia Kalinitchenko & Tigran Makayelyan. January 27, 2007. **Notes - For this production, the Bavarian State Ballet called upon Doug Fullington to reconstruct pieces from the Stepanov choreographic notation of the Sergeyev Collection, a cache of materials that document the Imperial Ballet's repertory at the turn of the 20th century while still under the directorship of Marius Petipa. The collection includes notation of Petipa's production of "Le Corsaire". In the case of the 'Pas d'esclave', the notation documents a 1903 performance of the dancers Varvara Rykhliakova & Sergei Legat. For this staging of the 'Pas d'esclave', only the ballerina's steps of the pas were reconstructed. The male variation was added to the pas in 1914 by Pierre Vladimirov, one of the great danseurs of his day, who was later chosen by Geroge Balanchine to be the first instructor of the men at the School of American Ballet when it was founded. In the 1930s Vakhtang Chabukiani revamped the choreography for the male, & Petipa's choreography for the female variation was replaced by Pyotr Gusev's steps, which are still performed today. Insertion by Riccardo Drigo for Mikhail Ivanov's score for Petipa's "La Vestale". 1888. It is unknown to me when this solo found its way into "Le Corsaire", but it appears to have been inserted into the ballet at some point at the turn of the 20th century. Choreography: the modern-day edition of this variation that is danced by all ballet companies is actually the work of Pyotr Gusev. Here, Petipa's original steps have been restored by Doug Fullington from the choreographic notation of The Sergeyev Collection. The notation documents a 1903 performance by the ballerina Varvara Rykhliakova. The original steps are far more musical & tasteful, in my opinion. Elena Filipeva has graced the Kiev Ballet theatre stage for many years and is the recognized Prima Ballerina of Ukrainian Ballet, dancing in the capital city of Ukraine. In 1998 when she danced in Moscow, she was a student at the Kiev Ballet School. In this video, she dances a variation that is commonly danced by both the Mariinsky and Bolshoi Ballet by a soloist in the Don Quixote Grand Pas. In this video, it is described as Classical Variation with music by Drigo, For over 20 years, I have felt that Filipeva's Laurencia variation from the 1989 Moscow Competition is the best Laurencia variation that i have seen. While still a student, i feel that this variation is perfromed better than all the Mariinsky and Boslhoi soloists that I have seen. Her tour jetes show beginning signs of a rare trait in Filipeva's jumps, the ability to seem to suspend in the air, even when not very high in the air. Her assembles with entre chat six are exceptional. She may not have the elevation of Osipova, but she has a great grace in her jumps.. + Informações

Grand Pas classique (choreography by Marius Petipa) - --1. Grande valse (Drigo) --2. Adage (Pugni) --3. Variation I (Drigo) **many will notice that the music of the Grand adage of the pas is also used in the Mariinsky's 1941 production of "La Bayadère" to accompany a pas for Nikiya & a slave. Konstantin Sergeyev utilized this music when he created the piece for his wife, the ballerina Natalia Dudinskaya, in 1954. This production was staged by Pyotr Gusev & the great ballerina Tatiana Vecheslova, who both remembered the ballet as it was performed before the choreography & mise-en-scène became heavily revised by Soviet-era ballet masters. Recently, a film of this production was released onto DVD, but unfortunately it was severly edited, leaving only about 55 minutes. **Notes of "La Esmeralda" - "La Esmeralda" was first staged in 1844 at Her Majesty's Theatre in London for the great Carlotta Grisi by the Ballet master Jules Perrot & composer Cesare Pugni during the heyday of the Romantic ballet. Variation danced by Yekaterina Shipulina. Music by Riccardo Drigo (1903). Variation for Anna Pavlova. Taken from Petipa's 1868 "Le Roi Candaule", which the Ballet Master revived in 1891 for Carlotta Brianza. The ballet combined Plutarch & Herodotus's tale of how the Shepherd Gyges usurped the throne of the Kingdom of Lydia from King Candaules via his Queen, Nyssia. In the context of the full-length ballet, this solo was performed during the celebrated bathing scene, when Nyssia dances to her slave's harp. For some reason the Bolshoi has re-orchestrated the music so that the strings are more pronounced, but it is still heard in Drigo's original orchestration in the Mariinsky's staging. Interestingly, this solo also turns up in the Vaganova School's rarely seen "La Sylphide" pas de deux. This was one of Pavlova's favorite variations - she danced it many ballets. 2. Variation danced by Yekaterina Krysanova. Music by Riccardo Drigo (1902). Variation for Olga Preobrajenska (?). Taken from the Ballet Master Achille Coppini's 1902 staging of the Delibes/Minkus "La Source" for the Imperial Ballet.
