This was the first successful documentary ever made, and was a true benchmark for ethnographic film. Robert Flaherty brought and entirely unknown culture to the western world. The Flaherty family lived in Port Arthur Ontario from 1901-1905, and one of my relatives by the name of Hans Haugen held a photograph album from Robert Flaherty. Hans Haugen owned the general store at Loon Lake, where the Flahertys had their summer home. I've obtained a photograph called "The Sharks at Loon" containing Robert J. Flaherty, his father Robert H. Flaherty, and a few prominent family members of Port Arthur at the time it was taken. The Flaherty Cabin still stands at Loon Lake, and their former home is located on Algoma Street in Thunder Bay.. + Informações |

Nanook of the North Live Performance 4.78 min. | 4.0 avaliação | 3006 exibições « Nowhere has man learned to do so much with so little ». Robert J. Flaherty Nanook of the North In 1920, Robert J. Flaherty films the first masterpiece in the the history of documentary cinema, northwest of Hudson Bay. During more than a year, he films the life of an Inuit family, focusing on their capacity to adapt, their gaiety, their daily courage and the innate nobility of the Inuit people. To this day, this film which has become world famous, has not lost any of it's power to fascinate. Shown in it's original silent version, « Nanook of the North » is accompanied by the Canadian/Swiss musician and composer Shirley Anne Hofmann. As a solo performer, Hofmann mixes various acoustic instruments with sampling technology in an original way. Partly improvised, her composition borrows techniques form Inuit folkore. She simultaniously endows Flaherty's unforgettble images with a dimension of naivity and poetry, perfectly adapted to the film-maker's vision. A musical and cinematographic performance for young and old Music : Shirley Anne Hofmann. + Informações |

Retake's Nanook of the North - Trailer 1.83 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 5297 exibições Retake Productions Presents: An original score composed in Spring of 2008 by Kyle Williams and Adam Fuderer. The film was originally released in 1922 and is credited as being the first feature length (78 minutes) film documentary. It portrays the life of Nanook and his family and their daily routines. Controversy has long surrounded the film. Critics argue that director Robert Flaherty's portrayal of 'Eskimo' life was based on a romantic, fictional perspective. At the time this film was made, Nanook and his family were not exactly living this way but had moved closer into areas where white settlers were stationed. Nevertheless, the film serves as an anthropological relic from a time before the emergence of white settlers in Native Inuit land. It was made in what might be considered a transitional period for the Inuit people. Whether you enjoy focusing on the beautiful struggle for life and love in the barren tundra or prefer to analyze the inaccuracies and criticize the 'white' portrayal of Inuit culture, you'll enjoy Nanook of the North. And you'll certainly enjoy it 7 to 8 times more now that it has a beautiful, modern score composed by musicians from Portland, Oregon. The score was written over four months starting in January of 2008. There are 13 sections (or songs if you like) some of which last 2 minutes, some of which last 13 minutes. The score will be available on CD and DVD through our website soon. Check our (Retake Productions) for details on the CD/DVD as well .... + Informações |

Part of The Nanook Of The North 1 of 2 2.25 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 22178 exibições Part of the documentary The Nanook of the North (1922). It is "a silent documentary film by Robert J. Flaherty. In the tradition of what would later be called salvage ethnography, Flaherty captured the struggles of the Inuit Nanook and his family in the Canadian arctic. The film is considered the first feature-length documentary, though Flaherty has been criticized for staging several sequences and thereby distorting the reality of his subjects' lives.[1] In 1989, this film was one of the first 25 films to be selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being 'culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant'".
