Recorded in Dar-Es-Salaam in 1973. The company in the picture may be similar, but is not the same as in the recording. The one in the recording may be larger. Wanduni comments: This is pure traditional African music. To appreciate it fully, one must not only listen to the music but also see the dance troupe in action. In African traditional dances, meaning is to a great extent conveyed through the costumes, gestures as well as the dance patterns (often acrobatic and symbolic). The sad thing is that this kind of music is an endangered species. Governments speak volumes about preserving African culture but traditional music is only given space during national holiday celebrations. Special dance troupes (often made up of fairly well-educated young people) study these dances and present them to tourists, giving an unreal presentation of the continent to the foreign visitors. In reality, traditional music is the soul of the so-called African pop music and great musicians like Franco and Mbaraka Mwinshehe succeeded in blending folk melodies into their modern "Jazz Band" compositions. This is a medley of different dances. Mawsi Khai-vocals, n'goni / Suti Gabeh-guitar Baf-guitar / Pôl-bass / Brice-drums Bës-percussions / Dj Ganesh-turntables, samples D-FE have their own music genre : the zwenks (pronounced zuenx) metal, which can be described as metal mixed with ancestral African vibes (tribal metal), this music is extreme, roots and urban ; it consists of African rhythms and percussions associated with blast beats and very heavy guitar riffs, with samples and scratches of the best effect. And on this chaotic sound, we have different styles of singing (hip hop/ragga, guttural, incantation vocals) with lyrics in Ka (Caribbean), Duala (Cameroon) and French, serving as a form of original musical expression, aggressive and politically incorrect. Zwenks is a Caribbean word of the eighties which means crazy, bizarre, strange (not on this earth), but brutally and dirtily funky. If you are open minded and u know how to move your ass and break your neck, the zwenks is definitively for you. Warning : under the tropics and specially in the Caribbean, there is some devastating cyclones, one of them is recurrent and is called D-FE, and maybe it will go elsewhere to see if it zwenks one day... D-FE is nervous and violent (and sometimes dark), because the band wants to sensitize the public about the different problems of the planet, and specially those of the African continent and its Diaspora, which some of its seven members come from.
