It is generally acknowledged to be Mussorgsky's greatest solo piano composition, and has become a showpiece for virtuoso pianists. It has also become known through various orchestrations and arrangements produced by other musicians and composers (see: Versions by other hands, below, for further discussion), with Ravel's arrangement being the most recorded and performed. The version by Maurice Ravel (also produced in 1922, to a commission by Serge Koussevitzky) is a virtuoso effort by a master colourist, and has proved the most popular in the concert hall and on record. Víktor Aleksándrovich Hartmann nació el 5 de mayo de 1834 en San Petersburgo y murió el 4 de agosto de 1873 en Kireyevo, cerca de Moscú, fue un arquitecto, escultor y pintor ruso. También trabajó como arquitecto y esbozó, entre otras cosas, el monumento al milenario de la creción de Rusia en Nóvgorod, que fue inaugurado en 1862. Junto con Ivan Ropet, Hartmann fue uno de los primeros artistas en incluir motivos rusos tradicionales en su trabajo. Estos motivos eran, en gran parte, elaboraciones imaginarias a partir de elementos orientales, pero su impacto fue tal que dio lugar a todo un estilo arquitectónico que hoy consideramos como genuinamente ruso. El gérmen de esta nueva sensibilidad se encuentra más en su pintura arquitectónica que en su arquitectura propiamente dicha, en concreto en "La Puerta de Kiev". Desde que Vladímir Stásov lo introdujo en el círculo de Mili Balákirev en 1870, se hizo amigo del compositor Modest Mussorgsky.
