"Pass the Dutchie" was a song recorded by the British group Musical Youth from their 1982 album The Youth of Today. It was a major hit, holding the number one position on the UK singles charts for three weeks in September and October 1982. The song was a cover version of the song "Pass the Kutchie" by The Mighty Diamonds[1], which deals with the recreational use of cannabis, "kutchie" being slang for a cannabis pipe. For the cover version, the song's title was bowdlerized to "Pass the Dutchie", and all obvious drug references were removed from the lyrics; eg, when the original croons "How does it feel when you got no herb?", the cover version refers to "food" instead. At the time, "dutchie" was used as a slang term to refer to a food cooking pot such as a Dutch oven. It has since become a drug reference in itself, denoting a blunt stuffed with marijuana and rolled in a wrapper from a Dutch Masters cigar. The song was first championed by radio DJ Zach Diezel and became an instant hit when it was picked up by MCA Records in September 1982. In the early 1980s not everyone had cable TV. In Los Angeles a sort of new wave American Bandstand was the alternative to cable's MTV. It was called MV3. This syndicated music video show featured (1) the latest music videos as a backdrop to (2) local dancers and (3) lip synched performances by artists such as X, The Plimsouls, Lords Of The New Church, Oingo Boingo, Berlin, The Bangles, Missing Persons, English Beat, Thomas Dolby, Psychedelic Furs, Adam Ant etc.; artists that were currently being played on KROQ (Los Angeles). Three hosts included then KROQ DJ, Richard Blade, "comedian?" David Maples, and "actress?" Karen Scott. Trivia: Blade and some of the regular dancers also appeared in an episode of "Square Pegs".
