In the wake of the 2012 Fantastic Films Weekend, curator Toni Booth introduces you to the Hammer Horror Collection held at the National Media Museum in Bradford. Fantastic Films Weekend is dedicated to horror, fantasy and sci-fi cinema and television, hosted by the National Media Museum in Bradford, a unique site which can screen all film formats including widescreen 70mm, 3-strip Cinerama and IMAX. The festival began in 2002 as a weekend event focusing on classic ghost stories and the supernatural. Over the last nine years it has evolved into a must-see showcase of classic chillers, sci-fi shockers, fantasy epics, vintage TV shows and rarely seen gems from the vaults. FFW runs the gamut from the stark monochrome classics of the silent era through to the latest digital epics. The North Museum of Natural History & Science in Lancaster, PA previews its newest attraction: a quantum levitator. It's a circular track of magnets above which a razor-thin disc magically levitates, seeming to defy the laws of physics. Purchased for about $7000 from Tel-Aviv University, the levitator is believed to be the only one of its kind in a United States museum. The key to the levitator is the disc, which is made of superconducting material sandwiched between layers of gold and sapphire crystal. A piece of foam is placed on top and held in place with household plastic wrap. The disc is then dipped into a brew of liquid nitrogen (temperature: minus-300 degrees Fahrenheit). Palaces is a participatory artwork which relies on public donations of fallen milk teeth in order to grow. Gina was inspired to develop a project around human milk teeth by her discovery, through conversations with Sara, that milk teeth are a source of human stem cells. She then linked this discovery with questions surrounding the legacy of milk teeth after the 'tooth fairy' might have visited, which were raised with her by her then 7-year-old daughter. Palaces was created by artist Gina Czarnecki in collaboration with scientist Prof Sara Rankin, Imperial College London.
