L'ho ritrovata oggi in una cassetta dove c'era tutt'altro. Non ricordavo neanche di averla. Il 7 novembre 1969, quando uscì il singolo di "Whole Lotta Love", facciata B "Living Loving Maid (She's Just a Woman", avevo poco più 14 anni... e rimasi folgorato da quel riff ammazzatutto e da quella voce stridula, lontana dagli stereotipi dell'hard rock e più vicina ai cantanti folk, se non fosse stato per i garretti d'acciaio ? Poco importa, ma lo scoprii dopo, che il brano, ma non il riff della chitarra di Page, fosse basato su "You Need Love", 1962, scritta da Willie Dixon per Muddy Waters. D'altronde i Led Zeppelin, sia in studio sin dal primo album sia dal vivo, citando brani blues a profusione, presero a pieni mani dalla musica nera e in molti casi plagiarono i classici del blues, come prima di loro Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Small Faces, Animals e tanti altri. Forse per questo motivo adoro Led Zeppelin IV, meno legato al blues e, forse per questo, più originale. Però la chitarra di Page e la voce di Plant erano eccezionali. Nacido en Rolling Fork, Mississipi. Fue grabado por primera vez en una plantación del delta del río Misisipi por Alan Lomax para la biblioteca del congreso en 1940. Más tarde se mudó a Chicago, Illinois, donde cambio de guitarra acústica a guitarra eléctrica, volviéndose cada vez más popular entre los músicos negros de la época. La forma de tocar de Waters es altamente característica dado su uso del slide. Su primera grabación para Chess Records mostraba a Waters en guitarra y vocales, apoyado por un contrabajo.
