6.3.3 Outline the role of the skin and mucous membranes in defence against pathogens. The skin is a physical barrier and has two layers: An outer epidermis which is toughened by the protein keratin and a dermal layer. The dermis has sensory receptors, hairs and blood capillaries. In the deeper layer of the skin, cells reproduce to replace skin cells lost at the surface. The mucous membranes are endodermal linings in the body which line cavities exposed to the external environment. There you may find a thick sticky fluid secretion that we call mucous. The mucous will trap any particles which are inhaled via the nose or mouth into the trachea, along with any associated pathogens, thus preventing pathogens from further entering the body. Furthermore, ciliated cells, with 'hair-like' projections will 'beat' to push mucous up and out of the trachea with any pathogens contained or caught in the mucous - thus removing them from the body.
