Phil Elverum will release his first of two Mount Eerie albums in May with Clear Moon, an 11-track collection that will serve as the follow-up to 2009's great Wind's Poem. Today, we're hearing the lead single off Clear Moon in "House Shape," which is the very definition of a burner. The track builds slowly, albeit steadily at a foot-stomping pace, for nearly two minutes as guitars and synthesizers swirl around the percussion. There's no place to spend our money where we live. The generous world suggests we live generously so we lay under low wide branches of the oldest tree on the dune, or in the hay, where we will stay for so long without moving that the careful birds finally relax and make black nests in your black hair and find ants walking around my unmoving feet and we will only notice this play of the world (that long moss is growing on us) (that that wind has rewritten us) (the give and take not stopping ever) for only a moment and then, having breifly noticed, let the world roll on, doing this, through open gates. Listen: theneedledrop.com On Mount Eerie's latest effort, Phil Elverum managest to transform is usual sounds and emotions into a repetitive, drone-y, and sometimes ambient musical experience. Mostly, it's beautiful, but a few moments felt a bit overlong to me. Plus, despite being well over 40 minutes, I didn't come away from this album feeling completely satisfied with the songs and material I was dealt. Still, it's a very solid album. Phil keeps the sounds of Mount Eerie potent, strange, and emotionally affecting while changing things up enough to keep his musical trajectory interesting for longtime fans. What do you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? I've always been a big fan of Phil, and he does not disappoint here. I thought his last album was as good as it got, but this one provides an altogether different and incredible experience. This might be a bit biased, since it is the first track and the best opportunity to make an impression, but it really did. I came in with no real expectations in terms of sound, as I tend to wall myself off from previews or anything like that. I don't like preconceptions much, but this song kind of overpowered me right off the bat, and that was really refreshing. It continues on and is a great bookend for the album, and an easy top 200 pick, to go along with the 28th place the album earned on my list.. + Informações
