1953 GM Detroit Diesel 6-71 first start of the day. I walk around it at about 1:30. Check my other videos if you like these. I apologize the engine is not securely fastened down, it is basically sitting on a pallet and pivoting on the oil pan and frame rails of the bus it was removed from, so she really rocks when the harmonics are right during the idle hunting (aka "Detroit Roll"). Also, I have no work into her yet, this is as received condition, so she smokes some, especially from the rear most bank of cylinders (I am suspecting one cylinder). Possibly would clear up if run under a load until warmed up, it has sat for a long time and may have oil pooled in the airways of the block (if it sat on it's side, etc...), etc... I tried to show how the governor linkage is trying to control and correct the idle speed. A DD is actually supposed to hunt at first start, but only about 2-3 times (per specifications). If more than that occurs, it needs adjustment of the buffer screw on the governor. By that point, the engine is probably long in the tooth, and should really have a full rack on on it (set injection timing, etc...). I did this start with no exhaust fan on (no extra noise), so it does fill the room with smoke. It actually inhales some into the blower suction side, like self EGR. I don't care, I'm happy to have saved her from the smashing jaws of death at the scrap yard, which did claim the life of the GM Old Look bus (#TDH-4512) this engine was in. Harley-Davidson history... is long and proud and began at the start of the 20th century. The beginnings of this American icon were very humble. William S. Harley, born in 1880 and Arthur Davidson, born in 1881 lived next door to each other in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. While the two friends were working in a local manufacturing plant, they decided to build an internal combustion engine to be used on bicycles. They became friends with a German co-worker who was familiar with the De Dion engine already being used in Europe. With his help, they designed a small air-cooled engine. Arthur's brother, Walter Davidson, who was working as a machinist was recruited for their bicycle engine project. They built a little engine with a bore and stroke of 2 1/8 x 2 7/8 inches. Soon after they completed the engine, they realized it didn't have enough power. In 1902, they designed a second engine with the help of another talented mechanic by the name of Ole Evinrude. You've probably heard the name Evinrude before. This new engine had the same displacement as their previous engine but with a larger flywheel and over/under pocket valves. I upgraded my SUMMIT to the Kershaw Designs twin 970 motors. I do like this upgrade, but I got some mixed results. The motors are extremely strong, and I can now pop Wheelies whenever I want. But the truck has trouble in high gear at top speed with the new motors. This isn't the motor's fault, it's just that the truck isn't really designed to go that fast. Also the motors pull so much power thru the electrical system that they tend to cause the ESC to go into thermal shutdown after hard running or in tall grass if you don't manage them carefully. This could also be controlled somewhat with different gearing. I have not had any problems with thermal shutdown in low gear. Probably a better upgrade for the SUMMIT would be the Kershaw Designs twin 700 HO motor mod. I already have that mod on my E-MAXX and it rocks! It is very strong and doesn't cause any overheating problems at all. Overall, I like the 970s, but I think they are a bit big for the Summit and the ESC. I will keep them though and just manage my driving to keep the temps for the electronics where they need to be. You probably don't want to attempt this mod unless you are an experienced modeler and understand the points I made above and are ok with them.. + Informações

Really long video of us riding Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2). Had a lot of fun running from Lady L. A few scary moments for both of us off vid.....so I won't waste time with details here.
