Exploring the Elektron Octatrack - something a bit different. Apart from the 3 drum sounds, this was made entirely from 1 Novachord single note sample. The same sample is assigned to 6 different tracks and a variety of techniques are employed to use the sample in a polyphonic way. No slicing was used at all and there are no external effects or processing. I thought it ended up sounding like it had been made on the Monomachine, hence the title. Track 1 has the sample triggered once at the start of the Pattern (32 steps) and then I'm Plocking the Vol setting at various steps to get the gated sound. Track 2 has several Triggers this time with the Pitch Plocked to different semitones but on Trigless Trigs so that the sample still 'evolves'. There's no filter used, the sample itself has a long filter envelope on it. Track 3 uses a similar idea but this time I'm using a slow LFO to modify the Start parameter which again makes it sound filtered as the timbre changes depending on where the Start parameter is. Track 4 has a Trig on every other step and uses Delay feedback to effectively play two notes per Trig (tempo is 80bpm). I'm controlling both the Envelope Release and the Start parameter to change the character of the sound. The Filter distortion is cranked up too. Track 5 uses the sample reverse but 2 octaves below to give a bass drone (-12 on the Pitch and the Rate is at 32). I'm also using AMD and AMF and a slow LFO on the Filter Width to modulate the tone. Creating a Stereo track from a Mono track is pretty easy. Although it's not "True" stereo, because it is basically a duplicate of the Mono track in both channels, it is useful when you are using an Effect like Vocoder which requires a stereo track. Or you want just a stereo track to edit. ?Mono to Stereo: Open and Select your Mono track in Audacity Click Edit then "Duplicate" (Ctrl+D) Click the Track Drop-Down Menu of the 1st track and select "Left" Click the Track Drop-Down Menu of the 2bd track and select "Right" Now click the Track Drop-Down Menu of the 1st and select "Make Stereo Track" Now when you Export the file, it will be saved as stereo ?Stereo to Mono: To make a Stereo track Mono, simply click the Track Drop-Down Menu and select "Split to Mono". When you Export the clip, Audacity will warn you that your tracks the will be mixed into a single mono channel. That's what you want so say OK and you're all set. My third Lego NXT-Mindstorms robot called NXT-grub. It is able to steer though it has only one single track! The biggest challenge was to make a bendable track and to let it stay in control.
