The vinyl oddity for this week is by a band called "Moby Grape" and the closing track to side one of their third album "Wow" in 1968. Moby Grape is a rock band, somewhat typical of the period, however "Just Like Gene Autry; A Foxtrot" is a 1920's-era sounding dance number complete with a cameo spoken introduction by Arthur Godfrey himself, who also happens to play ukelele and banjo on the number. As if this tune isn't odd enough, the original vinyl on Columbia mastered this one track at 78 rpm rather than the typical 33-1/3 rpm as the rest of the album is pressed at. An announcement precedes the track "reminding everyone to kindly get up and change your turntable to 78, thank you!" after which there is a lock-groove that stops the needle from playing any further until you pick it up and place it on the next track. Not something you come across very often. The video itself opens with an edited intro to "Murder In My Heart For The Judge" heavily processed through some effects. There needed to be some sort of audio during the otherwise silent presentation of the album cover and label... After this I drop the needle at the end of the last "normal" track prior to "Just Like Gene Autry" (called "Can't Be So Bad") while the inside of the album jacket is quickly perused. The only printed lyrics for the tune are displayed as they are sung, and during the sax solo (allegedly by "Lou" of "Lou Waxman & his Orchestra" at the Seacaucus Lounge of the fabulous Fandango Hotel in Weehauken .... + Informações
