In cell biology, a mitochondrion (plural mitochondria) is a membrane-enclosed organelle found in most eukaryotic cells.[1] These organelles range from 0.5 to 10 micrometers (?m) in diameter. Mitochondria are sometimes described as "cellular power plants" because they generate most of the cell's supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), used as a source of chemical energy.[2] In addition to supplying cellular energy, mitochondria are involved in a range of other processes, such as signaling, cellular differentiation, cell death, as well as the control of the cell cycle and cell growth.[3] Mitochondria have been implicated in several human diseases, including mitochondrial disorders[4] and cardiac dysfunction,[5] and may play a role in the aging process. The number of mitochondria in a cell varies widely by organism and tissue type. These compartments or regions include the outer membrane, the intermembrane space, the inner membrane, and the cristae and matrix. Mitochondrial proteins vary depending on the tissue and the species. Differently from the outer membrane, it is impermeable to almost all substances. Fats and sugars, which are important to us as they are sources of energy, are transported differently across the inner membrane. Actually, by this point, sugars have been converted by the cell to pyruvic acid, because as we have already seen, they have given up 2 ATPs, and can thus enter on their own. But fats which are larger and more complex molecules must be carried by another special molecule available to the cell for this specific purpose, carnitine. After it has carried out its job, carnitine leaves the fats to be broken down and returns outside to start the work once more. Sugars and fats, both transformed into acetates, enter the Krebs cycle where they give up hydrogen. This is a three-dimensional model of a mitochondrion made from an electron tomogram. An electron tomogram is a three-dimensional image calculated from a series of images recorded in a transmission electron microscope as the object is tilted. This mitochondrion model was calculated from four successive serial sections of a mouse cell. The model shows only the inner mitochondrial membrane with the inner boundary membrane rendered translucent, so you can see the individual cristae rendered in various colors. The model was made by Terry Frey and Mariam Ghochani at the San Diego State University Electron Microscope Facility.. + Informações
