Google Tech Talk April 8, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by W. David Schwaderer. Innovation is essential for all progress and competitive survival. It provides a democratic vehicle for individuals and upstarts to challenge and neutralize powerful incumbents. Yet, because change accompanies innovation, it is a double-edged sword. This presentation examines the historical reception transformative scientific breakthroughs initially received before widespread adoption. By example, it teaches principles that can help ensure change agents personally, and their organizations, are on the delivering side of innovation's sharp edge. W. David Schwaderer has a Masters Degree in Applied Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology and an MBA from the University of Southern California. He has worked at IBM, EDS, Adaptec, Symantec, and Silicon Valley startups. The film presents the story of the US Army's Nike Zeus anti-missile missile system, a system designed to "protect our cities and defense installations against intercontinental ballistic missiles." It describes the important role played by the Bell System in the development of this missile system through the research of Bell Laboratories and through the work of Western Electric as the prime contractor. In narration and on-the-spot filming, the piece traces the Nike missile development program from its early beginnings with the Nike Ajax and the Nike Hercules, which were designed to intercept and destroy enemy aircraft. We see how Nike Zeus, the last member (circa 1961) of the Nike missile family detected, tracked, intercepted and finally was able to destroy enemy ICBMs traveling at speeds of 15000 miles per hour. Soviet development of better ICBMs decreased the value of the Nike air defense system soon after this film was made. California energy company, BrightSource Energy and its Israeli subsidary LUZ II, unveiled a solar field in Israel this week that will test new technology the company plans to use during the construction of several massive solar power plants in California next year. The new solar field, with its 60 metre-high tower and some 1641 mirrors, sits on about 12000 square metres of Israel's southern Negev Desert. While it is capable of generating 1.5 megawatts, it does not produce electricity for public use, but rather test the technologies that will power future plants, which will be about 50 times larger than the one in Israel. But when everything is based on credit and endless consumption, the overall method becomes simply unsustainable in the long run. Resources are finite, clean water is becoming scarce, and most people on this planet - barely make ends meet to feed themselves and their families. Technology and innovation is great, but it is also misused for political purposes and power games - regardless of its intrinsic potential benefits.
