Two songs from the 1960s by talented singer Miss Toni Fisher. Both songs were written and produced by her husband Wayne Shanklin. 'West of the Wall' was released in 1962 and had moderate success in the USA reaching number 37, remaining in the charts there for 11 weeks. In Australia however it was particularly popular, peaking at number 1 at the same time. The song tells of both the present sorrow and future hopes of lovers, families and friends, separated by the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961 by the communist East German government. It's a song that I have always been aware of, but it struck a chord with me after my visit to East Germany (via Checkpoint Bravo at Dreilinden) and East Berlin in 1985. The song was also included on an album of protest songs released in Australia in the 1980s. The second song, 'The Big Hurt', was Fisher's biggest commercial success, rising to number 3 on the 1960 Billboard Hot 100 US charts on Shanklin's own record label, Signet Records. It remained in the charts for four months till May 1960.
