"On the seashore" is a song by Mikis Theodorakis made on a poem by the great Greek poet George Seferis. It is a poem about inevitable changes in our lives where we have to let go of things we love and cherish and move on. The song was written in 1962 . It is a song that carries many of the distinct colours, phrases and sesnsations that make up what is Greece and I tried to couple those with photos that carry these feelings as well. The poet Iacovos Kambanellis was a prisoner in Mauthausen during World War II. At the beginning of the sixties, he wrote his memories of this time under the title of "Mauthausen". In 1965, he also wrote four poems on the subject and he gave Mikis the opportunity to set them to music. Mikis did this with much pleasure, firstly because he liked the poetry of the texts, and secondly because he was locked up during the Nazi occupation in Italian and German prisons, but mainly because this composition gives us the chance to remind the younger generation of history, that history that must never be forgotten. Picture: Liberated prisoners in the Mauthausen concentration camp near Linz, Austria, give rousing welcome to Cavalrymen of the 11th Armored Division. Finnish singer Arja Saijomaa and Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis made co-operation in 70's. There is one example of that, two wonderful artists from the other sides of Europe making together something quite unique at that time.In fact, this song is maybe the last recorded of that co-operation. Ihope owners of the rights want to see this as an honor to these artists, which it really is. And same goes to these random photos, which I have found from net. The scenes of Gavras' classic film which are scored with the music of Theodorakis. (I had to leave out a couple of them to keep the video under 10 minutes.) Based on a novel of Vasilis Vasilikos, "Z" is about the assasination (1963) of Grigoris Lambrakis, a distinguished athlete, doctor and politician, as well as an active pacifist and humanitarian.
