Another vintage masterpiece by Dr. Slinger "Mighty Sparrow" Francisco, the undisputed King of Calypso. This ditty was released in 1958 on the King Sparrow's Calypso Carnival LP under the Cook label. It focused on the reaction to the introduction of the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system in Trinidad and Tobago by the new government administration. That administration was led by Dr. Eric Eustace Williams, the twin-island state's first Premier and Prime Minister, whom everyone in the then British colony called "De Doctah". So, when you hear Sparrow and his slick chorus croon: "De Doctah say", know of whom they sing. (I believe one of the backup singers on this tune was another great calypsonian, Kade "Lord Brynner" Simon, who composed and sang "Rich Man, Poor Man".) Hope you enjoy? Bless!
