Mickey Newbury : An American Trilogy : TopVideos.com.br Mickey Newbury : An American Trilogy

Mickey Newbury is a songwriter most famous for a song he arranged, but did not write. One night in Los Angeles, at a time of national distress over war and race issues in the USA, Newbury spontaneously combined a southern anthem (written by a northerner, DD Emmett), a northern anthem (written by a southerner, William Steffe), and a third song that was originally a Jamaican slave song (All My Sorrows). In the audience that night were many celebrities, Odetta, Kristofferson and Streisand among them. The trio of songs brought tears to Odetta's eyes. It came to be called An American Trilogy, and would be adopted by Elvis Presley as the centerpiece of his later concerts. This clip is an extra from LIVE AT THE HERMITAGE, the new Mickey Newbury DVD, and features Marie Rhines on violin. The clip is uploaded with the permission of the Newbury family, and the DVD is available in the cd store at www.mickeynewbury.com Mickey Newbury Websites: www.mickeynewbury.com www.myspace.com/mickeynewbury. + Informações

A LONG ROAD HOME How I long to feel the salty wind off Galveston Bay in my face once again A warm southern wind on my weather-worn skin Perhaps I would not feel so old Now I long to hold the golden sand in the hollow of my hand Stand for a while there and fill in the hole left in the heart of a wounded old soul Here's to tomorrow; here's to today Here's to whatever I never did say Here's to old friends who have gone separate ways Here's to the memories How I long to be in those East Texas woods. I would be in those old Piney Woods if I could on a hot summer mornin' down Centerville Way ...the windows rolled down in my old Chevrolet Cruisin' the backroads with nothin' but time three nickels short of having a dime Miles from the highway, no hill left to climb Me and the whisperin' pine Here's to tomorrow; here's to today Here's to whatever I never did say Here's to your love, you are happy, I pray... Out on this long stretch of Interstate 10 that ol' Del Rio station just keeps rollin' right in Many the night it was my only friend. Just me and the radio The Silver Moon Cafe was once out this way Like Route 66, boys, it too had its day and this rusty old sign here is all that remains My, how the times have changed They tell me ol' Bud Rose hocked his guitar Bought a ticket to Nashville to become a big star Now he works on a bottle and he lives in a car Do you still have your dreams? You remember the old town here yesterday? The walk from the Ryman to the Linebaugh Cafe? We .... + Informações

"San Francisco Mabel Joy" is one of the first Mickey Newbury songs I remember hearing. This version comes from the album, In A New Age, which was released in 1988, the first Newbury release since 1981's After All These Years. The album contains new versions of eight classic Newbury songs, with a full version of "All My Trials" which is part of Newbury's "An American Trilogy" (which is also included on the album.) In 1988, Airborne Records planned a release in which Newbury demos were treated with synthesizers and other then-contemporary production effects. Vehemently opposed to this project, Newbury instead re-recorded the songs Airborne planned to use, and the album was released with these new recordings, effectively Newbury's first recordings in years. Violinist Marie Rhines accompanied Mickey on the album. A modified recording of this album was released in 1999 as part of a double-cd of Newbury's called It Might As Well Be The Moon. Mickey Newbury Mickey Newbury "In '59"

The song, "In '59", is the lengthy opening track from the brilliant Mickey Newbury album, "A Long Road Home". The spoken word introduction I've edited in before the song is Kris Kristofferson speaking of the influence Mickey Newbury had on his own life and work. This excerpt comes from a compelling two-disc aural biography of Newbury by the late San Francisco radio legend, Ron Lyons, called "Mickey Newbury: An American Treasure". Well worth looking for. As for "A Long Road Home," it is, considering Mickey's failing health at the time of its making (he was on oxygen), not only a masterful album of autobiographical depth and breadth, but a triumph for being made at all. Mickey Newbury : Mickey Newbury : "Tilde"
9.77 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 2115 exibições

Mickey Newbury was an American singer-songwriter born in Houston, Texas, in 1940. He died in Springfield, Oregon, in 2002. Annual songwriter gatherings in his honor continue to this day, held each summer in Texas. Willie Nelson said, "He was one of the best writers we've ever had, and one of the best friends I've ever had." The song presented here, "Tilde", is a Newbury arrangement of a traditional song (more commonly known as "Sylvie"), and was released posthumously on "Blue To This Day". The opening segment is Susan Newbury talking about a hilarious late-night restaurant episode concerning Mickey's relationship with time and dates. "Tilde" is a masterful and powerful example of what Newbury could do in adding his own genius to a traditional song. Remember The Good Written and performed by Mickey Newbury (1940-2002, RIP) Re-recording released on Blue To This Day (2003) Oh, I suppose At times I think about her She was once so much a part of me And heaven knows I have learned to live without her Although hell it was, at times it was such a painful memory But for all it matters now, if it does And for all I've tried to be, but never was For all the times I've cried I wouldn't change it if I could For all she meant to me I remember the good I'll forget the bad All the good times we've had Won't make me quite so sad When I'm remembering And for all the times I've tried I wouldn't change it if I could For all she's meant to me I remember the good All she's meant to me I will remember the good. + Informações

Mick and Susie celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary in October of 1979. Though traditional and modern gifts include tin, aluminum and leather, he gave her a pretty song. "It became a family joke," explained Susan. "If there was an anniversary or birthday coming up, the kids would go shopping and Mickey would go writing... He knew I was happier with a new song than anything from a store." Mickey explained the strategy during a Bay Area concert. "Being the cheapskate that I am... see it's cheaper... I mean I can just slide back in a little dark corner... and come out... and I'm a hero for a year!" His gift to Susie this year was titled, "I Still Love You After All These Years." Patiently you waited for so long Stood beside me knowing I was wrong Through all my confusion You could hear the perfect song 'I still love you after all these years' (quoted rom Joe Ziemer's Newbury biography, 'Crystal & Stone') This video is dedicated to Susan Newbury. One of the most dramatic of Mickey Newbury's songs, this version of "Nights When I Am Sane" comes from his Winter Winds album (2002), a revision of his 1993 album using the song's title. Four songs from the original album were dropped and six new tracks added. Quoting from Joe Ziemer's biography, "Crystal & Stone," Mickey said near the time of Winter Winds' release, about eight months prior to his death, "I've been dying all my life... whooping cough almost killed me at six. Encephalitis almost took me at eight. Broke my back when I was 23. Was in the hospital with pneumonia at 35. And now, doctors don't know how I'm able to breathe with advanced pulmonary fibrosis, which has led to pneumonia and congestive heart failure. My lungs are completely gone now, so any extra time here for me has been a real blessing... My religion will not let me end my own life. This has taught me that there is no tomorrow. You should do the things today that need to be done. Tomorrow is too late." 5.17 min. | 5.0 avaliação | 11061 exibições

This Mickey Newbury recording comes from his 1973 album, Heaven Help The Child. Cortelia Clark was a blind folk-blues singer who performed on the streets of Nashville at the corner of Church and Union, where he also sold shopping bags. This is where Mickey met him. A student from Vanderbilt University, Mike Weesner, made a recording of Cortelia, which later came to the attention of Felton Jarvis, who was Elvis Presley's record producer for RCA at the time. Jarvis convinced RCA to make a street recording of Cortelia Clark. The subsequent album, "Blues In The Street," sold very few copies, but Jarvis submitted it to the Recording Academy in the folk category, and Cortelia Clark won a 1966 Grammy Award for his album. Mickey Newbury wrote the song after learning of Cortelia's death. "In Nashville, there was an old man there I used to go and listen to all the time. He was really a great old guy. I was in San Francisco... and I got back home, picked up all the newspapers and went inside, started reading through them. Found out he had burned to death in his trailer while I was gone. I don't know how much it will mean ever to him, but this is a song I wrote about him..." This is the version of "Frisco Depot" from Mickey Newbury's "In A New Age" album from 1988. It was Mickey's last vinyl release. It was put out on the Airborne label, which folded shortly after the album was released. This album, Mick's first studio recording in seven years, introduced violinist, Marie Rhines. Mickey played the Photon guitar he'd gotten from Chet Atkins. There's a lot more to the story of this album, which you can read about in Joe Ziemer's biography of Mickey, "Crystal & Stone". The record was laid down in a single day. Although his songs have been recorded by hundreds of performers from a wide variety of musical genres, he is most remembered for his creation of "An American Trilogy", a medley that was recorded by many, including symphony orchestras, and Elvis Presley.
