Raining Away - my beautiful girlfriend, Patricia, stood on the front step on a breezy Seattle afternoon in summer 08 and taped me singing several songs on my little porch. You can see her in my eyes if you look very closely. Raining Away is a song people assume came to me because of living in Seattle. Not so, I was surviving in the dusty plains of Amarillo when I wrote this, one of my first good songs. Who can't relate to the line - "I was around, but you didn't notice me back then"? When I wrote this song I was remembering childhood crushes, thinking of the endless new schools I went to and the ridiculously romantic valentines I'd leave for little girls I didn't even know, then I'd have to hide in embarrassment until my family moved again and sent me to a new school. Whew! How I survived my boyhood, I'll never know. The great thing is, I now have my Sweetheart of All Time to send valentines to. Her name is Patricia O'Driscoll and she very lovingly films and edits these charming videos to accompany my songs. At the end, you see us walking along a small canyon near her home, meandering along a path that winds up against a canyon wall of trees and wild flowers and then falls away in tall, flowing grass to the trickling creek below. From my earliest childhood days I can recall loving the restless wind and rain, the wild and furious hail and snow of the Texas Panhandle. Weather changes were big and fast there, but as intense as they were, there was mostly sunshine. I longed for rain. If you listen to most of the songs I've written through the years, I often sing of it. In Seattle, where I've lived since the mid-80s, my love of rain and cloudy days made me feel like I'd finally come home. From Answers.Com Michael Tomlinson was born and raised in Amarillo, TX. He then moved to Austin to be where the heart of Texas music is found. In the mid-'80s one of Tomlinson's songs found its way to be the number one song in a Seattle, WA, radio station's history. The song was "The Climb," and it was reason enough for From Answers.Com Tomlinson to pull up roots and move to Seattle, where he made his home in 2001, 17 years later. Michael Tomlinson left the traditional music business in the early '90s at the height of his growing career. At the time he was headlining at many infamous venues, such as The Greek Amphitheater in LA, The Paramount in Denver, and Wolftrap in Washington, DC He found his songs being played on NAC and AAA radio stations, but was concerned about corporate takeovers of radio and record companies. He tired of the 50-page contracts and endless meetings with attorneys. He simply decided to walk away and leave it all behind. Tomlinson pulled a rare and fairly clever move as he found a way to regain ownership of all his records. He then returned home to Seattle to start his own small record label, Desert Rain. Tomlinson began at that moment to rebuild his career in a way more in keeping with the gentle messages and open heart which is signature in his own music. Each October my sweetheart, Patricia, and I go out to Orcas Island in the San Juan Island chain in Washingtons' Puget Sound and spend a few days wandering the backroads, bookstores, and especially, the Olga Cafe, where the blackberry pie is heaven. My new CD The Way Out West, was about to come out and we decided to do a video for one of my favorite songs on it, Things That I Don't Know. Patricia filmed most of it outside at the Inn at Ship's Bay, then edited it in Seattle this week. Sunlight - this is one of those songs that has stayed in my concert play list for over twenty years. I still love so many of the lines. "Why do I need answers to loves surprise?" Years- Years was one of the first songs I ever wrote, inspired by my folks and their beautiful love for each other. Sometime in the mid-70s I won a college song writing contest because of it and got quite excited thinking that it bode well for a career as a recording artist. It was slow coming though, took me another 12 years to put out my first album. I'm a late bloomer I guess, but that just makes it all so much sweeter now. On a cloudy Northwest afternoon in August, my sweetheart, Patricia, and I drove out to the Snoqualmie River, at the edge of the Cascade Mountains, and filmed this song. We found a beautiful oasis of trees and grass next to the river and spent the early evening singing The Way Out West. Our little pooch, Bungee, yapped relentlessly for us to let her into the frame. The problem with that is that you end up with a little fuzzy dog appearing and disappearing with each take. So we banished her to the camping chair a few feet away and pretended while I was singing that we did not hear a constant barking rebuke from the pooch. That evening we drove back to Seattle in a light rain, the top still down, in my ol' Malibu, with my girl all wrapped up in blankets and my jacket and cozied up against me.
