Cretu conheceu sua futura esposa, Sandra Lauer , quando ele tocava teclado na banda Arabesque 's. "Crockett's Theme" is an instrumental song written for the hit NBC series Miami Vice. The surname Crockett refers to Don Johnson's character, James "Sonny" Crockett. The initial version of the theme first appeared in the episode Calderone's Return: Part 1 - The Hit List which aired on October 19, 1984. Composed by Jan Hammer, this song is an example of the instrumental New Wave hits popular during the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s. Sin da giovane ha studiato pianoforte, per poi trasferirsi in Germania assieme alla famiglia, dove poi ha dato il via alla sua carriera di musicista. Nel 1985 compone, arrangia, produce la hit eurodance Samurai seguita nel 1986 dal follow-up Gambit. In questo stesso periodo realizza tutte le produzioni musicali di Sandra a partire dalla hit Maria Magdalena. Nel 1990 ha iniziato il progetto Enigma assieme alla moglie Sandra, cantante figlia di padre francese e madre tedesca. Il primo album pubblicato in questo progetto è stato MCMXC aD (il significato letterale del titolo è: 1990 Anno Domini, ossia 1990 dC). Inoltre Cretu ha dato il via ad un nuovo stile musicale, unendo agli antichi canti gregoriani da chiesa il suono delle moderne tastiere elettroniche. Il suo stile tuttavia si è modificato con l'avvento dei sintetizzatori, andando a puntare su un suono più elettronico, come si nota negli ultimi due album di Enigma Voyageur e A posteriori.
