Mezzrow - Lyttleton 1986 Humphrey Lyttleton and his Band in 1986. Humph is one of the most unique jazz musicians from the UK. The tune "Mezzrow" is a 32 bar tune with a wonderful chord pattern to improvise on. One reason or another clarinettist Mezz Mezzrow recorded a tune with these chord patterns several times with his good friend Sidney Bechet It has always been one of my favourite tunes and wherever we played I tried to fit it into the program. I learned it from one of Humph's recordings.Obviously it was one of Humph's favourites as well. Here he has set an interesting head arrangement and eventually he changes to clarinet and so do Bruce Turner and Johnny Barnes and the tune ends up with a three clarinet ensemble.This tune is also known as Revolutionary Blues. + Informações

Milton Mesirow, better known as Mezz Mezzrow (Nov.9,1899 - Aug.5,1972) was an American jazz clarinetist and saxophonist from Chicago, Illinois. Mezzrow is well-known for organizing and financing historic recording sessions with Tommy Ladnier and Sidney Bechet. Mezzrow also recorded a number of times with Bechet and briefly acted as manager for Louis Armstrong. However, he is remembered as much for being a colorful character in his autobiography Really The Blues as for his music. It takes its title from a musical piece by Sidney Bechet. The book was co-written by Bernard Wolfe and first published in 1946. Mezzrow has never been ranked as one of the best jazz musicians (some critics have ranked his musical abilities as below mediocre), but he organized and took part in some magnificent recording sessions involving the very best black musicians of the 1930s/40s, including Benny Carter, Teddy Wilson, Frankie Newton, Tommy Ladnier and - most importantly - Sidney Bechet. Mezzrow's superb 1938 sessions for the French jazz critic Hugues Panassie involved Bechet and Ladnier and helped spark the 'New Orleans revival'. In the mid-1940s Mezz started his own record label, King Jazz Records, featuring himself in groups that usually included Sidney Bechet and, often, trumpeter Oran 'Hot Lips' Page. Le solo de piano est celui enregistré en 1944 et gravé sur le cd dont la pochette est présentée au début de la vidéo, je l'ai raccordé (plus ou moins bien) avec le reste de l'accompagnement qui est réalisé avec Band in a Box. Je pense avoir mis un tempo un peu trop rapide, je referai cette video plus tard. Pour ce morceau j'utilise le Bec 5RV avec une anche Lavoz Hard et ma clarinette Buffet RC. Mezz Mezzrow (clarinettiste) occupe une place particulière dans l'histoire du jazz à plusieurs titres. Il a laissé une biographie, Really The Blues traduite en français, sous le titre "La rage de vivre". Familier des musiciens noirs de blues et de New-Orleans, il consacre une part essentielle de son énergie à tenter de maintenir le style original du jazz. Il est un des tout premiers jazzmen à fonder, dès 1933, un orchestre mixte (musiciens noirs et blancs).
