Whittingham Hospital opened officially on 1st April 1893. Built to house around 2500 patients it was to be the largest area designated for the treatment of "LUNATICS" this is by far the most creepy place i have been in my life! This is about 20mins drive from leyland and is located in preston lancashire England and is rumoured to be a very haunted place indeed. An incredible chance to see a working former lunatic asylum in the 1960's. This is previously unseen footage having been stored for decades on 16mm film reel. www.highroydshospital.co.uk STANLEY ROYD The building was necessary to care for the treatment and care of the insane poor, and work began on it in 1816. The main builders were John Robson, John Billinton and William Pockrin - all from Wakefield. Work was completed and the hospital occupied by the 23rd of November 1818. The eventual cost of the building work was £23000 being £7000 more than the contracted price. The total cost was shown in the records as £36448. 4s. 9¼d. The building stood in an area of 25 acres. For privacy the grounds were surrounded by plantation in either Wakefield or Stanley to be quiet, peaceful and secluded. It was a much needed hospital for in the early part of the 19th century very little was available by way of treatment for mental illness. Before the opening of this asylum, sufferers were incarcerated in prisons, workhouses or in their own homes at none of which treatment was available except for purging, bleeding or mechanical restraint. Some of records of mechanical restraint make horrific reading. There was a case of a James Norris who, at Bethlem Hospital, London, was chained for several years to a vertical bar fixed to a wall, able only to slide in his chains from a sitting to a standing position. A few friends and I decided to take a trip this Friday night into the old and dilapidated annex of Bryce State Mental Hospital near the Tuscaloosa Airport off of Highway 82. There isn't much information on the web on the history of the annex but I found a good compilation of the rumors and what is known about the place on the al.com ghost stories forum: "Actually, what everyone calls "Old Bryce" appears to have been a mental institution built as the sister to Bryce Hospital. Bryce is located in Tuscaloosa next to the University of Alabama. 'Old Bryce' was the mental hospital for black patients during segregation, from what I understand. There has indeed been a fire, and the building may be structurally unsound. During wetter seasons of the year, the basement floods, and is impossible to navigate around. It is not advisable to enter Bryce, as it is constantly under surveillance by the local police, trying to keep trespassers away. It is owned by the state of Alabama, as is the SD Allen nursing home that sits on the land adjacent to "Old Bryce." Old Bryce was actually called either The Colony or the Boy's Colony. As for the reason that it closed down, there is speculation that experiments were performed on the patients that may have been inhumane (lobotomies, for instance). But at the time, these procedures were considered legitimate medicine. This is the last remaining building of the old mental hospital (ORC - Oxford Regional Center) located in Woodstock, Ontario. This building still stands today, but is surrounded by new housing development, and so probably won't be there for much longer. Check out the video to find out more. *Here's some cool stuff that didn't make the video: -In the early 1900's some patients were placed in tents on the grounds of the hospital in the summertime and during periods of warm weather for treatment & recreation, and to alleviate overcrowding. Tuberculosis patients were also placed outside in tents to protect other patients from infection. -Danvers State didn't have a dining room until 1897. The first meal accommodated 522 patients and 64 employees. The dining room was on the second floor behind the central building. 120 by 80 feet it had air and light on three sides.
