Lui était le fils d'un petit noble Sicilien, né en Italie en 1602, et venu en France à 37 ans pour se mettre au service du principal ministre de Louis XIII, le cardinal de Richelieu. Rien ne destinait Anne d'Autriche et Mazarin à se rencontrer, ni à se trouver ensemble à la tête de l'Etat le plus puissant d'Europe.
